Over 62 years ago, Disney came out with the beautiful film that is ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Since then, the movie has inspired sequels and even the castles at Disneyland Paris and Disneyland park alike.

  1. Aurora and Opera
    • The voice of Aurora (Mary Costa) was a professional opera singer! Her opera long and successful career spanned over 40 on-stage roles.
  2. Disneyland Distraction
    • Sleeping Beauty took a lot more time than anticipated because Walt Disney was distracted with another important project – Disneyland. It seems that he made up for the delay by making Sleeping Beauty castle the focal point of the park. The castle was originally supposed to be Snow Whites’ but was changed to Sleeping Beauty as a promotional tool!
  3. A Familiar Inspiration
    • Mary Costa may have been the voice, but Helene Stanley was the inspiration for the look of Aurora! If the name ‘ Helene Stanley’ sounds familiar, it may be because she was also the reference for Anita from ‘101 Dalmations’ and Cinderella!
  4. Multiple Releases
    • Sleeping Beauty was re-released several times after 1959! You could see this classic in theaters in 1970, 1979, 1986, and 1995.
  5. Sneaky Mickey
    • Have you spotted the hidden Mickey in Sleeping Beauty? There’s a point when the 3 fairies are discussing how to best assist the king and queen, Merryweather is holding a Mickey-shaped cookie!
  6. 30-Year Gap
    • Sleeping Beauty wasn’t exactly a hit. Reviewers did not favor the film and sit took 30 years for Disney to put their faith in another princess movie – ‘The Little Mermaid”.
