Our beloved Mickey Mouse turns 90 years old this year! It’s hard to believe our favorite Mouse has been around for 9 decades. That’s why we thought we’d take a bit of a walk down memory lane and share with you some fun facts about Mickey Mouse throughout the decades.
1. Steamboat Willie made it’s official debut on November 18, 1928 which many consider to be Mickey’s official birth date!
2. 5 years in and Mickey Mouse was already the stuff of legend! As a matter of fact, Walt Disney won an official Academy Award in 1932 for creating this magical character that they world had fallen in love with.
3. Mickey Mouse made his feature film debut in Fantasia which premiered on November 13, 1940 in the exact same theater that Mickey first made his debut in Steamboat Willie! The theater was originally called the Colony Theatre before changing its name to the Broadway Theatre.
4. The Mickey ear hats that are still an iconic Disney theme park souvenir actually made their debut back in the 1950’s at the same time that Mickey Mouse got his own pep squad! That’s right, the Mickey Mouse Club made their small screen debut on October 3, 1955. The hats were designed by Disney Legend Roy Williams who was hired as an artist by Walt Disney himself back in the 1930’s.
5. In the 1960’s Mickey Mouse actually left Earth! Wally Schirra an astronaut aboard the Apollo 7 wore a Mickey Mouse watch when he orbited the Earth.
6. Mickey Mouse received his own star on the Hollywood Walt of Fame back in 1978 to celebrate his 50th Anniversary. He’s seen above coming out in support of Minnie who just recently received a star of her own back in January of 2018!
7. Mickey Mouse made his big screen debut for the first time in 30 years with the holiday classic Mickey’s Christmas Carol which premiered on October 20, 1983.
8. On January 24, 1993 Disneyland Resort unveiled Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland theme park. 25 years later, this is still the go-to spot for West Coast mouse fans to meet Mickey and the gang and to get some magical insights into their daily lives!
9. Since 1923, there have been over 121 Mickey Mouse shorts and featurettes that have been released in theaters! That’s a mighty impressive body of work!
There is another Mickey Mouse milestone just around the corner with the recent news ABC Television Network will be joining in the fun with a 2 hour prime time special dedicated to Mickey! Broadcast from Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Mickey’s 90th Spectacular will premiere on Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 8-10pm EST. Guests can expect a star-studded array of performances and appearances as well as tributes and rare short films never before seen by the public. Be sure to mark your calendars for what is sure to be the not-to-be-missed television event of the season!
