What is the Walt Disney World Mountain Challenge?

Roller Coaster Day

10 Disney Coasters

Are you always up for a good challenge? How about a challenge that’s completed at Disney World and is done in one day? Well, you are in luck, there just so happens to be a challenge at that is not only fun and exciting but can be completed in one day! It is the Walt Disney World Mountain Challenge, and here is how to complete it.

The Walt Disney World Mountain Challenge involves riding five specific attractions in one day. Why these five specific attractions? Well, all five take place on or inside some type of “mountain”. Some of the involved attractions have longer standby wait times than others, and it will be important to plan accordingly if you’d like to successfully complete this challenge. Four of the attractions can be found inside Disney’s Magic Kingdom, and one attraction is located inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Here we will go over all five attractions and our tips to ensure a smooth and successful Mountain Challenge.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad-located in Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened September 23, 1980, is located in Frontierland and is a mine-train roller coaster. This attraction has a height of 104 ft and reaches speeds up to 35 mph. With its fun twists, turns, and mine-train theme, it’s easy to see how Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a favorite. If you catch this attraction at the right time, you can get on with a minimal standby wait time. We suggest using the My Disney Experience App to check wait times throughout the day.

Early Morning Rides

Splash Mountain-located in Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Splash Mountain opened October 2, 1992, and is also located in Frontierland. Splash Mountain is a log flume ride based on characters and songs from Disney’s 1946 film Song of the South. The attraction lasts just over 11 minutes and concludes with a 50 ft drop. It is important to know that you will get wet riding this, so plan your day accordingly! Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are both located in Frontierland right next to each other, so we recommend riding these two attractions back to back for the sake of time and convenience.

Space Mountain-located in Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Space Mountain opened on January 15, 1975, and is the oldest operating roller coaster in the state of FL! Space Mountain is found in Tomorrowland and is an indoor, dark, space-themed roller coaster. Space Mountain is a very popular classic attraction and can have hefty wait-times, so planning a Fast Pass +,  utilizing Extra Magic Hours or “rope-dropping” at opening could save some time.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train-located in Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Seven Dwarfs mine train opened May 28, 2014, and is a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs themed roller coaster that can be found in Fantasyland. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is the most popular attraction in the Mountain Challenge, and one of the most popular attractions in all of Walt Disney World, so we definitely recommend using Fast Pass +, Extra Magic Hours or “rope-dropping” to ride with less wait-time. However, if you do end up in the standby queue, there are multiple interactive activities throughout to keep you occupied.

Expedition Everest-Legend of the Forbidden Mountain-located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Expedition Everest is the only attraction needed to complete the Mountain Challenge that is located inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Expedition Everest can be found in the ‘Asia’ section of Animal Kingdom. Expedition Everest is a steel rollercoaster themed after, you guessed it, Mount Everest. This exciting thrill ride boasts the title of the tallest mountain in any Disney park and will take you up to speeds as high as 50 mph. Due to this attraction being located in a different park than the previous four, you will definitely want to plan it out. We recommend heading to Disney’s Animal Kingdom to knock out Expedition Everest either early in the morning before heading to the Magic Kingdom, or after you’ve successfully ridden all four included attractions at the Magic Kingdom. Securing a Fast Pass + is also always a bonus!
