With all of the hype surrounding Epcot’s new roller coaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, I can’t help but remember attractions that EPCOT has seen come and go. EPCOT has always been meant to change and progress with the times, so it’s no surprise that we’ve seen some of our favorite attractions and experiences be replaced over the years. Let’s take a little trip down memory lane and celebrate some of our favorites that are no longer operating.
Horizons
Open from 1983-1999 Horizons offered a glimpse into what the future might hold. Horizons was a very popular attraction that really took hold of the essence of EPCOT (the future and progression). Who could forget the amazing smell of the Orange Grove? Or the catchy theme song, “If we can dream it, then we can can do it”. I still miss ride every time I visit EPCOT! Mission: SPACE is now where Horizons once was.
Maelstrom
Open from 1988-2014 Maelstom was a dark boat ride featured in the Norway pavilion of the World Showcase. While Frozen Ever After replaced this attraction, the ride track is pretty much identical. Maelstrom was a fan favorite and is one of the most missed past attractions at EPCOT.
World of Motion
While Spaceship Earth takes us on mankind’s journey of communication, World of Motion took guests on mankind’s journey of transportation! This fun, animatronic-filled ride was open from 1982-1996 and was appropriately replaced by another ride that celebrates transportation- Test Track!
Kitchen Kabaret
Open from 1982-1994, Kitchen Kabaret was a show featuring none other than singing food! Tgis fun and hilarious musical revue featured songs such as “Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit” and stars including The Cereal Sisters and the Fiesta Fruit!
Universe of Energy
The original Universe of Energy was open from 1982-1996 and was replaced by the very similar Ellen’s Energy Adventure before completely closing in 2017. This was one of EPCOT’s main attractions and remained popular despite how long it was. Luckily, we can still get out fix of animatronic dinosaurs by riding Dinosaur over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park! Of course the brand new Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster is set to open in this location on May 27, 2022!
One thing is for sure, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) will “always be in a state of becoming”, just as it was intended!
