Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

On October 5th, 1949, Walt Disney Productions released ‘The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. For those unfamiliar, the film contains two segments based on literary classics: 1908’s ‘Wind and the Willows’ and 1820’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’. Though the films’ two stories have completely differing themes, they definitely complement each other. The excitement of Mr. Toad and the spookiness of The Headless Horseman, both stories are sure to ensure some level of chaos!\

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
  1. Nearly Cut
    • A very popular fact for this film has to do with the song, “Headless Horseman”. It was considered to be an extremely dark song, much like Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and was nearly cut from the film!
  2. Seeing Globes
    • The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was a Golden Globe WINNER! It won the ‘Outstanding Use of Color’ award in 1950.
  3. Two Becomes One
    • Did you know that each story was supposed to have its own film? Due to production issues and each film being too short, they were combined to be their own film!
  4. The Final Segmented 40’s
    • In the 1940s, Disney was well known for creating films with numerous stories within one film (Ex: Saludos Amigos, Make Mine Music). The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad would be the final film to do so until The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1977.
  5. Sounds Familiar!
    • Though this film came out in 1949, we can hear Rat calling Mr. Toads’ automobile obsession, ‘Motor Mania’. In 1950, a Goofy Short titled ‘Motor Mania’ would be released. Coincidence? We think not!
  6. Is that you, Bing?
    • If you recognize famous crooners, Bing Crosby’s voice may ring familiar in ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’! It is his one and only partnership with Disney – and a fan favorite.
  7. Influential Characters
    • If you’ve watched The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and Beauty and the Beast – you may notice a similar-looking (and acting) character. Beauty and the Beast animator Andreas Dejahas was influenced by Brom Bones when she worked on creating Gaston! We can totally see it!
