Disney Destiny Update: Float Out & Shipyard Showcase

Disney Cruise Line recently celebrated two exciting milestones for its growing fleet. This past weekend, the Disney Destiny floated out of the Meyer Werft Shipyard and into the harbor for the very first time. On Saturday, August 9, the hero and villain-themed ship, guided by Spider-Man and his Spider-Bots, was greeted by Hero Minnie as it inched out of the yard.

Not only is Float Out a significant milestone in the construction process, it’s also a time-honored maritime tradition that means the ship is one step closer to setting sail for the first time.

While the ship is docked outside Meyer Werft, work will continue on the upper deck and the vessel’s interior spaces, and we are happy to share one of the first looks inside the ship.

While the Disney Destiny is well on its way toward its maiden voyage, another ship in the Disney Wish class had a moment of its own on Friday. Joe Schott, president of Disney Signature Experiences, joined Philip Gennotte from Walt Disney Imagineering, Bernd Eikens from Meyer Werft and Cruise Director Carly Scott to cut a piece of steel for the next addition to Disney’s fleet.

With the help of special guest Captain Mickey Mouse, sparks flew within the yard’s laser cutting room, revealing the shape of a Disney cruise ship. Steel cutting is another revered maritime tradition dating back hundreds of years, meaning the construction process is underway for the vessel that is expected in 2027. Like its sister ships the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny, the ship will be approximately 144,000 gross tons, accommodate 4,000 guests and be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Captain Mickey’s work wasn’t done in Papenburg with the steel cutting ceremony, though. On Friday he also sprinkled some extra magic at a VoluntEARS event at nearby St. Lukas Heim, a center for individuals with varying disabilities from ages 6-21 years old whose mission is to allow everyone to participate in community life. VoluntEARS from Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Cruise Line joined 50 participants from the center for activities, including story time with donated Disney books, face painting and creative mask making.
