Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters Marks 20th Anniversary at Disneyland
Marking its 20th anniversary, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, a Tomorrowland staple at Disneyland, first launched on March 17, 2005, coinciding with Disneyland’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Prepare for an action-packed adventure aboard an XP-40 Space Cruiser, equipped with two infrared Astro Blasters. As you journey through the cosmos, you’ll encounter Buzz Lightyear and the evil Emperor Zurg, aiming to hit a variety of targets for points. Your cruiser will navigate through iconic locations like Star Command and Zurg’s imposing vessel, before plunging through a dynamic lightspeed tunnel, similar to Star Tours, and into the climactic face-off on Planet Z.
The target point values are:
- Circle – 100 points
- Square – 1,000 points
- Diamond – 5,000 points
- Triangle – 10,000 or more points
There are also some secret targets! Hidden targets are located between the chest plates of the Audio-Animatronic Zurg figures.
Additional targets are concealed on the right and left sides of the black tunnel, which features horizontal running lights.
Targets can also be found on the ceiling of that same black tunnel.

The backstory of Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters casts guests as Star Command recruits, tasked with preventing the nefarious Evil Emperor Zurg from stealing the “crystallic fusion cells” powering the Little Green Men’s vehicles. The queue area, bathed in Buzz Lightyear’s signature chartreuse, white, and bright blue, is designed to give guests the illusion of being shrunk to toy size, with oversized details like exposed Philips screw heads and a giant instruction sheet. An Audio-Animatronic Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Corey Burton, and a giant Etch-a-Sketch or Viewmaster, provide a mission briefing: destroy Zurg’s secret weapon with your Astro Blasters.
