Do you remember Disney Dollars? The official currency with character at Disney Parks?
These cute bills were first introduced to the world back on May 5, 1987 by Disney legend Jack Lindquist. This program made Disney one of the first private organizations to print its own money and have it accepted in theme parks like the U.S Dollar.
It all started as a unique marketing concept for Disney Parks. “We figured that we’re bigger than a lot of small countries, why don’t we have our own currency? said Jack. Next thing we know, Anaheim motorcycle police officers were escorting an armored truck to Disneyland’s main entrance.
Scrooge McDuck, whose signature you see on each bill, unloaded sacks of dollars at the ticket booths with news cameras capturing all the action. Guest Dale Castillo became the first person to purchase the happiest currency on earth!
The first disney dollars printed featured Mickey and Goofy with denominations like $1 and $5. Minnie was introduced two years later in 1989.
This was followed by a $10 Simba bill in 1997 to commemorate Walt Disney World 25th anniversary.
Donald Duck’s $10 bill was introduced in 2000 making it his first appearance on the currency.
The 2002 series $10 bill featured Tinkerbell and commemorated the 100 Years of Magic celebration. And in 2005 the first $50 bill featuring Mickey Mouse was released in honor of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland!
Other releases included a $1 Chicken Little bill in 2005 in honor of the film debut, a Disney Princess series and Pirates of the Caribbean in 2007 and a Mickey Mouse series in 2008 in honor of his 80th anniversary.
Disney Dollars are still accepted at the following locations:
- Ticketing locations
- Food and beverage venues
- Merchandise locations
- Recreation areas
- Disney resort hotel front desk
- Disney resort hotel concierge
- Guest Relations at Disney theme parks and water parks
Unfortunately, they are no longer available for purchase, so if you are one of the lucky people to still have some, you better keep them safe! They make a great collectible item.
