Haunted Mansion: Scrapped “Nevermore” Reference
While Edgar Allan Poe’s influence was felt in the early stages, the Imagineers originally envisioned a raven as the Haunted Mansion’s tour guide. However, this little bird proved difficult to see amidst the elaborate sets. Opting for a more prominent presence, they created the now-iconic Ghost Host character, voiced by the legendary Paul Frees.
A silent homage to the original concept remains, though. Keep an eye out for the animatronic raven that appears throughout the Walt Disney World version: perched on a funeral wreath in the conservatory, accompanying Madam Leota in the séance room, perched on a tree outside the attic, and atop the crypt at the ride’s conclusion. The raven’s presence is further emphasized in the interactive queue for the Liberty Square version, where a large raven figure sits atop the organ, welcoming guests before they enter the mansion.
A Spectral Shadow
The iconic Madam Leota, a disembodied head within a floating crystal ball, is a mainstay of the Haunted Mansion. She uses incantations to summon the invisible spirits who playfully levitate musical instruments and other objects around the séance room.
Madam Leota’s name comes from Disney Imagineer Leota Toombs. Imagineers Roly Crump and Yale Gracey used her likeness to experiment with a new projection technology for the character. While Toombs’ voice was ultimately deemed too soft, it resurfaces as “Little Leota,” the doll version urging guests to “hurry baaaaack” at the ride’s exit. The haunting voice of Madam Leota herself, however, belongs to the legendary actress Eleanor Audley, also known for voicing Maleficent and Lady Tremaine.
For a truly chilling encounter, head to the Magic Kingdom version of the Haunted Mansion. Keep an eye on Leota’s tombstone outside the entrance – the bronze face is rumored to open its eyes and peer out at unsuspecting guests!
The backstory for the Walt Disney World version gets even spookier. Legend has it that Leota, during her “mortal years,” escaped the Salem witch trials and settled in the Hudson River Valley, where Liberty Square now stands. There, she opened the Memento Mori shop (be sure to check out her portrait inside!). Listen closely, and you might even hear her mysterious knocking from behind the portrait or catch a glimpse of her in the mirror.
The Dread Family Busts
Adding to the immersive details at Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, the Dread family busts debuted in 2011. These sculpted characters, positioned at the cemetery entrance, greet guests with a range of unsavory expressions – malice, suspicion, disgust, and disdain. Their chilling stares and cryptic epitaphs hint at a family history steeped in drama and possible foul play. Keen observers can use these clues to piece together a murder mystery, with a potential resolution hidden within the ride itself. Meet Your Ghost Host

The instantly recognizable voice of the Ghost Host, delivered with chilling charm by the legendary Paul Frees, welcomes guests to the Haunted Mansion. His spectral presence remains unseen throughout the ride, but a hint to his fate appears during the stretching room sequence: a flash of lightning illuminates a skeletal figure dangling high above.
For eagle-eyed fans, a more complete picture of the Ghost Host exists. A discreet full-length portrait hangs in the Corridor of Doors, depicting a tall, gaunt figure with pale blue skin and white hair. Subtle details, like the rope around his neck and the axe by his side, hint at his past. Keep an eye out for this portrait just after passing the skeletal arm in the conservatory, as your Doom Buggy turns towards the grandfather clock.
Spooky Bride
The hauntingly beautiful Constance Hatchaway, also known as the Black Widow Bride, is a chilling presence in the Haunted Mansion. Guests get a glimpse of her dark past even before encountering her ghostly form. A seemingly ordinary portrait in the stretching room reveals a sinister secret as the room expands: the “gray-haired woman” holding a rose sits atop her late husband’s tombstone, a hatchet embedded in his bust. This foreshadows her true nature.
Later, in the attic scene, Constance appears as a ghostly bride, surrounded by portraits of her five deceased husbands. Look closely – each portrait reveals a new string of pearls around her neck, symbolizing her deadly legacy. Her spectral form reflects this, adorned with all five strings, a chilling reminder of her murderous past.
Rest In Peace
Sharp-eyed guests venturing into the Haunted Mansion queue lines at both parks will discover a hidden tribute. Scattered amongst the family cemetery plots are headstones honoring the talented Imagineers who brought the attraction to life. Each playfully inscribed epitaph offers a glimpse into the Imagineer’s contribution.
- Marc Davis, a patriarch of the project: Originally an animator known for characters like Maleficent and Cruella De Vil, Davis’s artistic touch graces the stretching room and portrait hallway. His influence is evident in the ride’s whimsical and lighthearted moments, like the ballroom scene.
- Claude Coats: Championing the spooky side: A background artist from animation, Coats was brought in to develop the eerie interiors. His influence is a reminder that the Haunted Mansion isn’t all fun and games!
- X Atencio: The lyricist behind the screams: Atencio’s talents weren’t limited to art. He penned the chilling lyrics for the “Grim Grinning Ghosts” theme song and even wrote the script for the Haunted Mansion itself.
- Yale Gracey: The “special effects wizard”: Imagineer Gracey’s technical expertise brought the illusions of the Haunted Mansion to life. Guest speculation about him being the mansion’s proprietor became so popular that Disney officially adopted it as part of the lore.
- Harriet Burns: A pioneering Imagineer: The first woman on the Imagineering team, Burns’s contributions included early models and character development for the Haunted Mansion.
- Dear Sweet Leota, beloved by all. In regions beyond now, but having a ball. This playful epitaph honors Leota Toombs, an Imagineer who left her mark on several Disney projects, including the Haunted Mansion. While her voice was ultimately replaced, she remains a cherished part of the ride’s legacy.
- Rolo Rumkin. Lived and Died a Friendly Bumpkin. This lighthearted tribute goes to Roland “Rolly” Crump, a concept artist who envisioned a “Museum of the Weird” as an extension of the Haunted Mansion. Though the museum never materialized, his creative designs, including the iconic purple wallpaper, continue to inspire guests today.
Eagle-eyed fans might spot a familiar amphibian in the pet cemetery at the ride’s conclusion. A statue of Mr. Toad, whose “Wild Ride” made way for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1998, rests peacefully among the other ghostly creatures.
Some Seek to Become Permanent Members of the Haunted Mansion’s Ghostly Crew
One rumor surrounding the Haunted Mansion stretches beyond the attraction itself. The iconic line, “We have 999 happy haunts here, but there’s room for a thousand…any volunteers?” has fueled a persistent (and firmly denied) legend.
Some believe the line is an invitation for guests to become permanent residents of the Haunted Mansion. This has unfortunately led to a reported trend of individuals attempting to bring ashes onto Disney property. It’s important to be clear: Disney strictly prohibits this, and anyone caught attempting it will be escorted off the premises.
