Are you a thrill seeker who loves a ride with loops and high speeds? Or Maybe you’re a little more timid looking for something slightly lower key. Disney World has a roller coaster suitable for everyone’s needs whether you are a seasoned roller coaster veteran or a novice rider. Let’s take a look at what the world famous theme park has to offer.
Disney’s (and the state of Florida’s) oldest roller coaster, is the very well known and famous Space Mountain. Space Mountain is located in the Tomorrowland section of the Magic Kingdom. Although it is not the fastest roller coaster in the park reaching only 28.7 mph, it has theming that sets it apart from others. Lasting 2.5 minutes, this indoor roller coaster takes place in the dark and has you orbiting through space. With its many quick turns and unexpected drops, Space Mountain is out of this world! Riders must be 44 inches tall.
Big Thunder Mountain Raildroad, the second roller coaster to open in Disney, is an exhilarating outdoor runaway train found in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom The ride is set back in the Gold Rush days and has you speeding through, at 36 mph, the town of Tumbleweed. Riders will come across falling rocks and earthquakes as you clickity- clack through this mine town on a fleeing locomotive. For those riders looking to increase the thrill, riding in back and at night will definitely enhance the experience. Riders must be 40 inches tall.
Feeling a bit goofy but not so daring, Goofy’s Barnstormer is the perfect beginner roller coaster for any age. Opening in 1996 and formerly known as The Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm, this ride is located in the Storybook Circus section of the Magic Kingdom. As you fly around Goofy’s Wiseacre farm in an airplane, you will experience very mild drops, twists and turns on this 53 second junior roller coaster. Riders must be 35 inches tall.
Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom, is home to Disney’s newest (and fast pass+ worthy) roller coaster, The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. A family friendly roller coaster, that has you racing through the diamond mine from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at 34 mph. It features a curvy track with twists and turns, and although there are no steep drops, massive hills or loops, the train carts swing side to side as you go. There is also a detailed indoor section that has you traveling the mine where the Seven Dwarfs are digging for diamonds all while playing the famous Snow White tune “Heigh-Ho”. The ride also includes an interactive queue filled with games and activities to entertain everyone in the family. Riders must be 38 inches tall.
Animal Kingdom is home to two more of Disney World’s roller coasters. The tallest roller coaster in Disney, Expedition Everest is located in the Asia section of the park. Expedition Everest, themed around the Yedi hiding in Mount Everest, has you boarding in the village of Serka Zong and taking a speedy, 60 mph, route through the Himalayas to the base of Mount Everest. The ride has some spontaneous turns, an 80 foot drop and a unique mid-course switch track taking you in the reverse direction. The first few seats offer the best riding experience but no matter where you sit this ride offers some of the most amazing views in Disney World. Riders must be 44 inches tall
Also located in Animal Kingdom in DinoLand, is Primeval Whirl, a steel wild mouse type roller coaster that reaches a speed of 28 mph, has sharp turns, sudden dips and unexpected spins. This ride is designed to take you on a time machine back to the age of dinosaurs as they prepare for their impending extinction. This ride features two tracks that are identical but mirror imaged. Riders must be 44 inches tall.
Hollywood Studios only roller coaster (and my favorite) Rock n’ Roller Coaster is the fastest coaster in Disney (and second fastest ride) taking you from 0-57 mph in 2.8 seconds. One minute you are in a sound booth where you will be face to face with the rock band, Aerosmith who is finishing up a recording session. The next thing you know lead singer, Steven Tyler is inviting you to their concert. This indoor, in the dark roller coaster has you hopping aboard a super stretch limo and taking you on a ride through Hollywood, where you will pass some of California’s most famous landmarks all while rockin’ to the tunes of Aerosmith. With two loops and one corkscrew as you maneuver through busy city traffic, this coaster is by far the most thrilling. This is definitely one you want to fast pass! Riders must be 48 inches tall.
Like everything else in Disney World, each roller coaster offers something special and unique. There is something for everyone from the extreme coaster fan to the cautious.
