From Braves Spring Training to Banana Ball: The Incredible Evolution of ESPN Wide World of Sports
Before the Party Animals, before the Loco Beach Coconuts, and even before the NBA Bubble, ESPN Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World was already building a legacy as one of the most unique sports destinations in the country.

Since opening on March 28, 1997, the sprawling 260-acre complex at Walt Disney World has hosted everything from Major League Baseball and international soccer to cheerleading championships, basketball tournaments, military competitions, and some of the biggest moments in modern sports history.

Baseball helped launch the complex, with more than 10,000 fans attending the opening exhibition game between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. The venue would later become the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves for more than two decades, welcoming baseball legends such as Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Freddie Freeman, Derek Jeter, and Albert Pujols. It also hosted games during the inaugural World Baseball Classic and even served as a temporary home for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Over the years, the complex expanded far beyond baseball. Today, ESPN Wide World of Sports includes multiple arenas, dozens of athletic fields, baseball and softball complexes, track and field facilities, and competition venues capable of hosting everything from youth championships to professional sporting events.

Perhaps no moment showcased its versatility more than 2020, when the complex became the center of the sports world as host of the NBA Bubble. The site welcomed the entire NBA season restart, culminating with the Los Angeles Lakers capturing the championship inside AdventHealth Arena.

The venue has also hosted the Invictus Games, Team USA training camps, Orlando City Soccer, Pro Bowl events, AAU national championships, and countless youth sports competitions that bring hundreds of thousands of athletes and spectators to Walt Disney World every year.

This past weekend, Banana Ball made its Disney debut as the Party Animals and Loco Beach Coconuts bring their fast-paced, entertainment-driven style of baseball to The Stadium. For a venue that has spent nearly three decades evolving alongside the sports world, Banana Ball feels like the perfect next step in a history built on innovation, competition, and unforgettable fan experiences.
Whether you’re visiting for a youth tournament, a professional sporting event, or a baseball game where the players break into dance routines between innings, ESPN Wide World of Sports continues to prove that sports and Disney magic make a winning combination.
