Is Disney World still decorating for Halloween this year?

It’s the last month of summer in Florida, which means people are enjoying what’s left of the season before fall arrives. Despite the warm weather, August is the month that Walt Disney World Resort traditionally prepares for the Halloween season. In recent years, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) has started after the middle of August.

However, the challenges of 2020 have made unfortunate changes to Disney’s holiday schedule. The Disney Company has officially canceled all scheduled dates for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party due to the global pandemic. We understand the tough decision Disney had to make to ensure the health and safety of guests. Now Disney fans are left with a new question. Will Walt Disney World Resort still decorate for Halloween this year?

Halloween

The Magic Kingdom offers pumpkin displays along Main Street each year. Guests can observe these decorations as they enter the theme park. Choosing to put them up would certainly brighten everyone’s Halloween spirit. It’s likely we’ll see some measure of Halloween decorations added to Magic Kingdom.

Frightful Friends

Let’s examine a few possibilities by looking into the past. The first item we’ll evaluate is the parade at MNSSHP. The Headless Horseman appears just moments before the parade begins and seeing him trot down Main Street. Mickey and his friends lead the parade while wearing their Halloween costumes. They are accompanied by pirates, classic Disney villains, and other colorful friends from Fantasyland in singing “Boo to You!”

We acknowledge how the Magic Kingdom won’t be showing this parade given the social distancing parameters. However, the Magic Kingdom is currently offering special “character cavalcades” instead of parades for entertaining guests. These character cavalcades are randomized appearances of individual floats traveling down the parade route. It is possible for Disney to give us a Villains theme cavalcade to help celebrate the spirit of Halloween. The Disney Villains are iconic and quite popular among fans, so this would be fantastic to see.

Also, the current character cavalcades feature Gaston and Merida horseback through the Magic Kingdom. Maybe we will see the Headless Horseman after all!

Character Photo Ops

Next question pertains to the Disney characters. A fond Disney World memory for many is when they meet their favorite character for the first time. One special feature of the Halloween party is the ability to meet some of your favorite rare Disney characters.. For instance, Moana, Tarzan, Lotso, and Elvis Stitch are some of the special characters out for the night. You can even meet the Seven Dwarfs for a group photo! But Disney doesn’t currently offer the standard meet and greet opportunities due to social distancing.

A possible solution to this is to offer opportunities to see Halloween theme characters from afar. Stitch makes random appearances at the Tomorrowland stage, but they could show him in his Elvis costume. Even the Haunted Mansion is ideal for social distance. We’ve seen ghostly characters show up on the lawn of the mansion during MNSSHP. It would be great to see such ghoulishly delightful characters again!

Treats

There are special menu items exclusive to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Disney always has seasonal treats, so it’s likely we’ll see spooky menu items. Plus, we’ve already seen Disney’s plans for Halloween merchandise this year!

Will you be going to Walt Disney World this fall?
