Getting to Walt Disney World can seem as complicated as the trip-planning process itself

Embarking on a journey to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is an adventure filled with excitement and magic. It can also be a confusing process with new and seasoned guests alike wondering the best way to travel to the resort, especially given the seemingly ever-changing landscape of transportation options. Disney’s closure of the Magical Express back in 2020 made the trip to Walt Disney World a bit more complicated, and the recently announced merger between Sunshine Flyer and Mears Connect has seemingly removed yet another option from the list.

Not everyone travels to Walt Disney World by plane, of course. Other common travel options include taking a train or driving your own personal vehicle. With so many options to choose from, many guests often ask which is the best (IE the best for them). If you’re planning a trip and wondering about the best transportation options from the airport, or train station, or opting for a road trip, we have the tips you have been looking for.

Flying to Orlando International Airport (MCO)

If you choose to fly, Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the primary airport serving the Walt Disney World area. Here’s what you need to know about airport transportation:

  1. Airport Shuttle Services: Several shuttle services operate between MCO and Walt Disney World. Companies like Mears Connect provide convenient and reliable options. Visit their website or download their app to book a shuttle in advance. You can also look into booking a private car company for a more intimate (and faster) transportation option.
  2. Ride-Sharing Services: Uber and Lyft are available at MCO, offering convenient door-to-door transportation. Download their apps, request a ride, and enter “Walt Disney World” as your destination. You can check in advance to get an estimate of the cost from MCO to your resort, however, ride-share pricing does vary so your initial price estimate may not match what you actually end up paying when you get to Orlando.
  3. Renting a Car: Orlando International Airport has numerous car rental companies on-site. Pre-book your rental car to secure the best rates. Having a car provides flexibility and convenience for exploring the area. The car companies at MCO are BUSY, so booking in advance is the best way to ensure you actually can get a car when you get into Orlando.

Important Carry-On Items: When flying, it’s important to pack essential items in your carry-on luggage. Here are some items to include:

  1. Travel Documents: Keep your identification, airline tickets, hotel reservations, and any other travel documents easily accessible.
  2. Change of Clothes: Pack a change of clothes in case of any unforeseen circumstances, such as lost luggage or travel delays, as well as any needed medications.
  3. Magic Bands: If you have Magic Bands for accessing your Disney Resort hotel, keep them in your carry-on to ensure a seamless check-in experience upon arrival.

If your flight takes you to Sanford Airport, your transportation options are much more limited and I highly recommend renting a car or utilizing private car services from this airport.

Traveling by Train

If you prefer the charm of train travel, consider taking Amtrak to reach Walt Disney World. Here’s what you should know:

  1. Arriving at Orlando Amtrak Station: Orlando Amtrak Station is the closest train station to Walt Disney World. From there, you can book a shuttle or take a taxi to complete your journey. Plan in advance and consider Mears Connect for shuttle services. If you are taking the Auto Train, you will already have your car but plan for a longer drive once you get your car off the train since it utilizes the Sanford station.
  2. Shuttle Services: Several shuttle services offer transportation between the train station and Walt Disney World. Ride-share services, such as Lyft and Uber, are an option as well as booking a private car transfer. There are no rental car options available at the Orlando station, however, so if you are looking to rent a car you will need to arrange for a shuttle to the rental facility or will need to consider utilizing a different station that has rental car services available.

Road Trip Tips

For those embarking on a road trip to Walt Disney World, here are some essential tips to make the journey comfortable and enjoyable:

  1. Plan Your Route: Use navigation apps or GPS systems to plan your route in advance. Consider any potential tolls, traffic conditions, and estimated travel times.
  2. Take Breaks: Long car rides can be tiring, so plan regular breaks to stretch your legs, use restroom facilities, and grab a snack. Rest areas and gas stations along the route can provide convenient stops.
  3. Split the Drive: If your journey requires extensive driving, consider splitting the drive and staying overnight halfway. This allows for rest and rejuvenation, making the trip more enjoyable.

Having a car at Walt Disney World, whether it is a rental or your own personal vehicle, does have a ton of benefits. Parking is once again free at the resorts and is also free at the parks if you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort hotel. With your own vehicle, you do not need to wait for a bus to arrive to take you to your chosen park for the day, cutting down on your transportation time between the resorts and the parks. If you have never driven a vehicle on Disney property, note it is very large and very busy, so if you are not comfortable with driving in new areas with a ton of traffic you may want to consider sticking to the Disney transportation options.

Traveling to Walt Disney World offers multiple transportation options to suit your preferences and budget. Whether you fly and utilize airport shuttles or ride-sharing services, take the train with shuttle connections, or embark on an unforgettable road trip, careful planning and preparation will ensure a smooth journey. Remember to pack essential items in your carry-on luggage, whether it’s travel documents, spare clothes, or Magic Bands. So, choose your preferred mode of transportation, embrace the adventure, and get ready to experience the magic of Walt Disney World.
