Upcoming Universal Orlando Resort Closures and Refurbishments

Several attractions are slated for refurbishment in the coming months at Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort has shared its latest refurbishment calendar, and while a few attractions will only be offline briefly for routine maintenance, one of the park’s most visible thrill rides is about to close for good. Here’s a closer look at what’s closing, when, and why you may want to adjust your park plans over the next year and a half.

Revenge of the Mummy
August 11 – 13, 2025
Universal’s high-speed indoor coaster, known for its fire effects, intense launches, and battle against the vengeful Imhotep, will close for a short, three-day refurbishment. These quick closures typically focus on behind-the-scenes maintenance (think track work, effects calibration, and ride system checks), rather than any visible changes to the experience. Expect the Mummy to be back frightening guests almost immediately.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit – Permanent Closure
Closes August 18, 2025
This is the big one. After years of sending guests skyward with customizable soundtracks, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit will take its last lap around the Universal Studios Florida skyline on August 18. Known for its 17-story vertical lift, non-inverting loop, and infamous hidden song list, Rip Ride Rockit has been a park icon since its debut in 2009.

Universal has confirmed the ride will be permanently removed to make way for “a brand-new experience,” but has not yet revealed what will replace it. The removal will significantly change the park’s skyline and soundscape, making this your last chance to grab an on-ride photo, and maybe hunt for that elusive secret track one more time.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong
August 20 – September 3, 2025
The colossal gates of Skull Island will be shut for about two weeks while the trackless ride vehicles and elaborate projection systems get some TLC. With its massive animatronic King Kong and dark, jungle environments, maintenance on this attraction is no small feat. Guests can still enjoy the surrounding Jurassic Park and Toon Lagoon areas during the closure.

Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls®
October 6 – 31, 2025
The popular flume ride will go down for scheduled refurbishment just as the cooler weather sets in. This closure is fairly typical for water rides at Universal, giving crews time to refresh sets, repaint props, and ensure the water systems are in top form before the busy holiday season. Expect it to reopen just in time for the winter crowds looking to brave the splash.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™
November 10 – 20, 2025
The groundbreaking ride inside Hogwarts Castle will close for a short refurbishment, which may involve work on the KUKA robotic arm ride system, show effects, and screen technology. While Forbidden Journey is offline, the rest of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade will remain open, including Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Flight of the Hippogriff.

Volcano Bay Seasonal Closure
October 26, 2026 – On or before March 24, 2027
Universal’s tropical water park will enter its annual extended seasonal closure in late 2026, timed for the cooler winter months. The park is scheduled to reopen no later than March 24, 2027, just ahead of spring break. During the closure, guests can still find aquatic fun at nearby resort hotel pools.

While most of these refurbishments are short and strategically placed between peak seasons, the permanent closure of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit marks a significant shift for Universal Studios Florida. Its replacement — still under wraps — will undoubtedly be a hot topic among fans in the months ahead. For now, thrill-seekers and coaster lovers will want to prioritize a ride before August 18 to experience its unique combination of music, height, and speed one last time.
