Beloved by Disney Parks fans, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is an important park cornerstone. Though it tends to be overshadowed by newer or faster attractions, for fans, this show is a must-stop when visiting. If you are one of those who skip over Carousel but have always wondered what the fuss was about – you’ve come to the right place!
For those who have never ridden the beloved ride, what is ‘Carousel of Progress’? Simply put, you enter a theater, and take your seats to watch a rotating show that focuses on the industrial and technological advances from the past century. As Walt Disney World perfectly puts it, “Presented inside a revolving theater, the show includes an innovative audience seating area that moves around a stationary central stage for each act.”. That’s right! The stage stays still whilst the seating moves. The ultimate form of entertainment!
This attraction truly is a Disney institution. Walt Disney himself created the show and presented it under the name “Progressland” for the 1964-1965 World Fair. It then moved to Disneyland, where it was enjoyed from 1967 until 1973 when it began its move to Florida. Since 1975, Carousel of Progress can be found at Magic Kingdom within Tomorrowland. You really see Walt Disney’s innovation in this ride. He was obsessed with the future and how technology was not only becoming a part of our lives – but how it could be used to better it. You see this notion within each scene of the show – as well as the technology that was used to create the show itself.
The Sherman Brothers (known for their Disney musical portfolio) created the infectious theme song for the ride. This absolutely makes sense, since Walt Disney adored the talented brothers. There is no better song that encapsulates Disney’s passion for the future than, ‘There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow’.
Need a bit more convincing? The ride is indoors – a huge plus for people looking to escape the Florida heat. Additionally, if you may be overwhelmed by waiting in lines – the wait for this is generally a short one. A nice little show to fit into a somewhat hectic schedule. It’s also very quiet with a lot of seating – so your group can stay together as you sit and enjoy!
