When it comes to Disney fans, everyone has their own favorite nostalgic themes, characters, movies, and attractions. But why are so many generations of Disney fans so fond of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover? We’ll explain what makes it such a fan-favorite attraction!

What makes the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover such a popular attraction 1

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover is an elevated tram ride, propelled magnetically, that glides in and out of attractions.

The PeopleMover is a classic unlike other attractions at Magic Kingdom. Everyone knows this is the ride you get on when you need a break from the heat and all the walking. The attraction gives guests a 10-minute tour of Tomorrowland aboard a mass transit system of the future. You’ll also get to see behind-the-scenes of some of the Tomorrowland attractions.

For families that need a break from all the fast-paced rides and the hikes from one side of the park to another, this is the perfect attraction for a time out!  This 10-minute long ride is a Disney World classic having opened in July 1, 1975.  It takes guests on a narrated indoor and outdoor voyage through Tomorrowland where you’ll get a bird’s eye view of some of the land’s most notable areas including Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Space Mountain, Mickey’s Star Traders and some of the early architectural models of Progress City, one of the initial concepts for what would later be known as Epcot. Its got everything, sights, sounds, a gentle breeze and a slow pace that helps you relax and unwind!

PeopleMover fans describe its pace as soothing, and riders loom above the teeming Tomorrowland masses. It’s a chance to get off your feet and/or get out of the weather. The attraction is mostly open-air but under cover at all times. Its indoor stretches are air-conditioned.

There’s typically a good breeze up there, enhanced by the movement of the cars.

Fresh angles of the plaza are seen aboard the PeopleMover, as well as toward Tomorrowland Speedway and along the pathway to the Magic Kingdom’s hub. Currently, riders also get a higher viewpoint for the construction of Tron Lightcycle Run, the thrill ride going up on the far side of Space Mountain.

There’s a connection to Walt Disney, too. The transportation system was part of his vision for an experimental community of tomorrow, a city plan that eventually morphed into Epcot.

PeopleMover is an all-ages attraction that a family can enjoy together, one of Walt’s guiding principles.

Guests like peering down into other attractions on the route as well as displays, including the model for Progress City, that dream of Walt Disney. That exhibit has its own history, having been a part of Disneyland’s Carousel of Progress in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

Passengers pass through a pitch-black stretch where Space Mountain is running. For little ones, it’s also a relaxing introduction to Space Mountain, a gateway roller coaster attraction.
