The re-theming of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is well underway, with the attraction expected to open later this year. Recent rumors have recently indicated Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe would be updated to a Tiana themed restaurant to coincide with the new attraction. This results in a large anchor of what is currently Frontierland rooted firmly in the bayou rather than the frontier. Is it time for Disney to go all-in and completely re-theme Frontierland into a Tiana-themed/bayou-themed land?
Note a transition into the deep south/bayou would not be completely out of left field. While Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is the home of Liberty Square, Disneyland has New Orleans Square instead. Bringing that Louisiana-style theming over to Walt Disney World would be a fun and interesting update that would better theme the area of the park that will be the home of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
Nearby attractions Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tom Sawyer Island would also need to be updated to fit the theming. Tow Sawyer Island is not nearly as big of a draw as it once was, and a re-theme here would be welcome, perhaps as an area with shops and New Orleans themed activities and attractions. Updating Big Thunder Mountain would be a but more difficult, and could possibly be achieved via an overlay that updates the theming to fit in with a Bayou theme.
Disney is currently working on an update to Country Bear Jamboree, and that street area of Frontierland is well themed. This street would need to be completely updated to fit into the Bayou/Tiana theme, or segmented into a smaller Frontierland that would then transition into the new Tiana land.
When Disney announced the update to Country Bear Jamboree, they also noted “But hold your horses, we’re not done yet. We have a lot of growth and investment planned for our theme parks in the coming years and look forward to sharing more announcements about Frontierland … so y’all come back now, ya hear?” It seems Disney is already thinking about how to update Frontierland, with further details yet to be released. Perhaps they are already planning on expanding the Tiana theme into the land?
