It has been 41 years since Journey Into Imagination opened its doors within Futureworld in EPCOT. Though the attraction has evolved depending on your first visit to this iconic ride, everyone has a version they prefer. Whether you’re a fan of ‘Journey into Imagination’, ‘Journey into YOUR Imagination’, or the current, ‘Journey into Imagination with Figment’ – we all have the ride that opened 41 years ago to thank!
Opened on March 5th, 1983, Journey Into Imagination was the brainchild of iconic Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk. We meet a character called the Dreamfinder who is voiced by Chuck McCann. After meeting the Dreamfinder- who is still remembered today – we see the Dreamfinder vehicle of choice. Whether you’re a fan that calls it the Dream Mobile or the Dream Catcher – just know – you’re right! This vehicle collects ideas and dreams to create all sorts of magic. We are later introduced to Figment – who will follow us during the next versions of the attraction! This purple little dragon has captured the hearts of Disney attraction fans and has yet to let go!
While Journey into Imagination focused on Art, Literature, the Performing Arts and Science. The current ‘Journey into Imagination with Figment’ covers the senses. Replacing the Dreamfinder was Dr. Nigel Channing – played by Monty Pythons’ Eric Idle! If you wondered why the song ‘One Little Spark’ is so catchy – you can thank The Sherman Brothers for that! The song has been covered by each host of this beloved attraction over the years!
While the ride has changed – its theme of trying to educate and entertain has remained the same. As has that little Dragon – who not only became a mascot of the ride – but the park, itself – and we simply love it for that!
