On June 21, 1996 – Disney would release what is arguably one of the most… intense of their Disney Animated lineup. The Hunchback of Notre Dame rocketed into theaters with the beloved Quasimodo, lovely Esmeralda, and sinister Frollo. There’s plenty to love about this film. The music is beautifully powerful, the story is legendary – all whilst highlighting the strength of characters that don’t normally get their day in the sun. Looking to learn more about your favorite movie about this unsung hero? Check out the facts below and let us know your favorite!

1. Made in Paris

The film, set in Paris of course, was also partially animated and produced in studios not so far from Paris itself! The artists brought touches and details that only true Parisians and locals could bring. So if you’re one of those people who prioritizes buying local, this Disney movie is the one for you!

2. A Hairy Situation

Aside from the many animals you’ve seen animated, Phoebus was the first Disney characters to have facial hair!

3. Way ‘Out There’

The beautiful song, Out There, was created by lyricist Stephen Shwartz. He would create many of the films songs within the Notre Dame. Early in the morning, Shwartz would climb the stairs to the bell tower and look out. The view, sights and sounds inspired the song and in the end, general feel of the film.

4. Talkin’ Bout Gargoyles

Where did the idea of the talking Gargoyles come from? Well the book of course! In Chapter 3 of the novel, it’s stated that “He sometimes passed whole hours crouching before one of these statues, in solitary conversation with it”. It was that blurb that inspired some of the best lighthearted moments in the film.

5. To ‘G’ or ‘PG’, that is the Question

With such an intense film, both in content and specific scenes – screenwriter Tab Murphy expected the film to get a PG rating. It turns out that the Board decided to maintain a G rating – which was met with surprise from many people working on the film.

6. Belle? Is that you?

Looking for Easter Eggs? Belle can be seen with her nose in a book, of course! She is walking through the streets of Paris during the song, ‘ Out There’. So keep an eye out for our favorite small-town girl!
