On January 25, 1961, Walt Disney Productions released the animated hit, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. Like many Disney films, this classic was based on a novel titled The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. The movie became a hit for the studio, and that hit has created an entire market of sequels, remakes, and live-action reboots. So what is there to know about One Hundred and One Dalmatians that you may not have known? Check out the facts below to find out!

  1. Xerox Away!
    • When many of us think of animating a classic Disney film, many of us picture animators sketching each cell whilst painters meticulously color in the lines. Luckily, by the time that One Hundred and One Dalmations was being made, Xerox was being used to speed up the process in order to transfer drawings to cells!
  2. Duck or Dog?
    • Disney diehards will know the voice of “Clarence Nash” who voiced Donald Duck. But did you know the beloved voice was also behind the barking? So next time you watch the film, know that each bark from every dog was Clarence himself!
  3. That’s a lot of Spots
    • Fans that know and love this film may have seen this fact floating around. There were 6,469,952 spots on those Dalmations. Pongo has 72 whilst Perdita has 68 spots. And we appreciate each one!
  4. One of a Kind
    • So, on a Disney film, a character may have multiple animators that work on them. Animator Marc Davis made Cruella de Vil his main project. He was the only Animator that worked on her!
  5. A Change in Name
    • Roger and Anita’s last name is “Radcliffe” in the film. Yet, if you read the novel by Dodie Smith, you could find out that the couple’s last name was Dearly!
  6. A Familiar Cameo
    • Notice some mighty familiar pooches? Keep a lookout for Jock, Peg, Bull, and Lady! You may even see a silhouette of a silly old Tramp as well.
