When we travel to Walt Disney World my family and I think of our resort hotel as “vacation base camp.” It’s where you rest those feet and bodies that have walked miles around the theme parks. A place for your kids (and kids at heart) to catch a quick nap or cool off during the warmer hours of the day. Your space to check out those newly purchased Mickey Mouse ears one more time in the mirror before you head out for an exciting day in the parks. It’s … well, it’s “home.” Many recognize Disney worldwide for its attention to detail and its exemplary customer service. These characteristics definitely hold true for the numerous Walt Disney World resort hotels. Various cast members at your Walt Disney World resort hotel seem to effortlessly keep the resort running smoothly and ensure your stay is magical. One such group of cast members that we want to highlight today are the marvelous Mousekeepers!
I’m not sure about you, but there have been plenty of mornings we have been rushing out the door trying to get to the bus or water taxi in time for our early morning dining reservations or Extra Magic Hours and we leave the resort hotel room in a little bit of chaos. Fortunately, the amazingly hard-working housekeeping cast members fondly known as “Mousekeepers” are there to save the day. Mousekeepers work tirelessly to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible ensuring your room is clean and your towels are fresh all while going the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable and welcoming as possible. A perfect way to thank these incredible Mousekeepers is with a tip. But how much should you tip your Mousekeeper during your next Walt Disney World stay?
Mousekeeper Tipping
It is common practice to tip your Mousekeeper $1 per person per day. For instance, a family of 4 should tip $4 a day. This is the most common amount, however, if you receive remarkable service, certainly feel free to tip more based on the level of service you receive. It is also customary to tip a little more if you are in a villa or a larger room since the Mousekeeper will have more to clean and take care of.
Another important thing to note is that you should tip daily … not just at the end of your vacation. Since different Mousekeepers could service your room throughout your vacation, it is best to tip daily to ensure the Mousekeeper who is helping you that day will get the tip for their hard work.
Have Fun With It!
We like to add some sunshine to our Mousekeeper’s day with a decorated envelope or a hand-written note from my 5-year-old thanking them for all their work along with the tip. This is certainly not required, but it makes for a great craft project for your kids (or let’s be honest adults too) as you prepare for your trip. You can make fun tip envelopes decorated with stickers, drawings, write a quick note, and so much more. If you need some inspiration, search the internet for Mousekeeping envelop decorations and you will find plenty of examples of what others have done in the past. If you don’t have the creative juices flowing or are in a time crunch, you can just place an envelope on the table that is clearly labeled with “Mousekeeper” on it. This way the Mousekeeper will know the money is for them and not just money lying around from your last Mickey Bar purchase.
The Extras
While often the Mousekeeping staff take the extra time to go beyond the call of duty with fun surprises that include making towel animals or arranging pillows or stuffed animals in cute ways, please remember that this is not a requirement. Mousekeepers have extremely busy days, so if you do get one of these delightful extras, think of them as an added bonus to all the amazing work they have already done in your room.
During your next stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel, don’t forget to tip those Mousekeepers and thank them for all they do!
