Have you ever quoted a movie wrong or misheard song lyrics? Everyone has done it a time or two…or more. There are some pretty well-known Disney quotes floating around out there but they actually aren’t correct! There is even a pretty famous quote attributed to Walt Disney himself that he never even said. GASP! Check it out and be shocked.
“Mirror, Mirror”
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature film. You’re probably familiar with it and the famous line the Evil Queen says to her mirror, “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” NOPE! That is not correct! The actual line is “MAGIC MIRROR on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” This line is misquoted all the time!
“Luke, I am your father”
How many of you spoke the iconic Star Wars quote “Luke, I am your father” into a fan so you sounded like Darth Vader? Would you believe that you’ve been saying the line wrong? That’s right! Darth never says Luke’s name! The correct line is “No. I am your father.” WOW. I don’t know if I can retrain my brain to say the correct quote!
“We’re ALL Mad Here”
This quote from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland has been used many times! I’ve even seen the quote put on matching Disney shirts. Did you know that it is incorrect? Actually, the Cheshire Cat says “most everyone’s mad here”. If you have been misquoting it, it’s ok! The line “We’re all mad here” is actually from the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that the movie is based on.
A Whole New World
One of the greatest Disney songs to sing a duet to is A Whole New World from Disney’s Aladdin. However, this song is a popular one for misheard song lyrics. Many a Disney fan has sung Jasmine’s line “every turn a surprise, every moment gets better”. Ready to have your mind blown? Those aren’t the correct lyrics! It’s actually, “every turn a surprise, every moment red-letter.” WHAT?! Yep! And in case you’re wondering (because I was also wondering) red-letter means “something of special significance”.
Walt didn’t say that!
Last, but not least, is a famous quote that has been seen on numerous Disney merchandise items and is attributed to Walt Disney himself. “If you can dream it, you can do it” is an inspirational quote but sadly Walt never said that. That line was actually written by Disney Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald for the Horizons attraction at Epcot. WOAH. Fitzgerald said, “I am very familiar with that line because I wrote it! It was written specifically for the Horizons attraction at Epcot and used in numerous ways, from dialogue in the ride to graphics. I find it amusing that the Science of Imagineering DVD series attributes it to Walt Disney, but I guess I should be flattered.”
