As most of us know, the retheme of Disney World’s Splash Mountain attraction began this week. Disney is always trying to evolve and stay relevant and thought it was time for an update. This leaves many of us wondering which attraction could be next for a retheme. One attraction that doesn’t really seem to fit at Magic Kingdom Park is Tom Sawyer Island. Could this attraction be next?
The theme just doesn’t fit with today’s Disney
It seems like Disney is really trying to bring more traditional Disney themes to its attractions, such as retheming EPCOT’s Maelstrom into a Frozen ride, based on the hit animated film. The new attractions we are seeing at Disney seem to be based on Disney’s Intellectual Properties (IPs). For this reason, it really doesn’t make sense to keep Tom Sawyer Island as it is.
What exactly is Tom Sawyer Island?
The official description for Tom Sawyer Island on My Disney Experience reads
“Brave an adventure all your own at this rustic, secret hideaway inspired by the stories of Mark Twain.
To reach the island, board a log raft for a piloted trip across the Rivers of America and disembark at Tom’s Landing again for a raft ride back to shore.
In keeping with the laidback lifestyle that Tom is known to enjoy, you may experience a wait going to and returning from Tom Sawyer Island.”
What could Tom Sawyer Island be rethemed to?
So, what could this attraction be reimagined to? One idea would be to stick to the Princess and the Frog theme that Splash Mountain will have. The island could be redone with a fun bayou theme, complete with a beignet stand or even a full Tiana’s Palace restaurant! There are endless possibilities for retheming this attraction into a Princess and the Frog theme.
It just so happens that Splash Mountain (soon to be Tiana’s Bayou Adventure) is located very close to New Orleans Square at Disneyland Resort, so retheming Tom Sawyer Island at both Disney parks would make sense. One thing is certain, Disney will continue to evolve and follow the trend of inclusive storytelling in all of its attractions.
