Typhoon Lagoon provides an amazing way to relax and recharge at Walt Disney World
As an Orlando-area local who is fortunate enough to have the Water Park and Sports add-on to my annual pass, I find myself spending a lazy weekend day at Typhoon Lagoon very often (especially on days where the heat index makes visiting one of the four Disney theme parks a less than ideal idea). Growing up in the Northeast, I had no idea how expansive and immersive a water park could be until I experienced Disney’s version of a water park for the first time. If you have not yet had the opportunity to work a visit to Typhoon Lagoon into your Disney vacation itinerary, here are 10 reasons you need to spend a day there.

#10-North America’s Largest Wave Pool
We find ourselves spending a ton of time hanging around the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon. As North America’s Largest wave pool, the Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool is capable of producing waves up to an impressive 6-feet tall every 90 seconds. The Surf Pool is a great way to relax and body surf during a visit to Central Florida without needing to drive 90 minutes + to the closest beach.
#9-The Amazing Lazy River
Every time we visit Typhoon Lagoon, my family knows what my first stop will be-the Lazy River. Known as Castaway Creek, the scenic lazy river circles the entire park, providing a long and relaxing ride that is perfect for allowing the stress to just drift away. The river boasts an impressive 2,000 foot-long length, and contains 5 entrances meaning there will always be a way to get on and off the river close to where your family is sitting. Tubes are provided for your journey that includes scenic waterfalls, shady grottoes, and lush landscapes. There is even an entrance to the ice cream stand right off the river, allowing you to hop off and easily grab a snack!
#8-Family-Friendly Environment
Families traveling with small children will find themselves spending a lot of time at Ketchakiddee Creek. Attractions here are open to kids 48 inches or shorter, and include shallow pools, mini waterslides, a sandy beach, and a cave area with a waterfall. The area even plays Kid-friendly tunes, allowing small children to enjoy an immersive, fun-filled day in the sun.
#7-Fun Water Slides and Attractions
There are a ton of fun water slides and attractions to choose from at Typhoon Lagoon. There are several body slides you can check out, but my two must-do slides are Misadventure Falls and the Crush ‘n’ Gusher. Misadventure Falls family-raft attraction that features 4-person rafts that speed down slides on a whitewater voyage. There is even a belt that takes you in your tube up the ride, negating the need to walk up any steps to get started!
Crush ‘n’ Gusher is a super fun attraction that is perfect for the thrill seekers in your family. This Typhoon Lagoon slide features 2 person rafts that transforms a 400-foot-long tube slide into a water coaster. There are three tracks you can choose from: Pineapple Plunger, Coconut Crusher or Banana Blaster, with all featuring sharp turns, water jets that propel you up inclines, and a splash down into Hideaway Bay.
#6 Great Snacks
There are an array of amazing snack options at Typhoon Lagoon. Your Popcorn Bucket is able to be refilled, the mini donuts near the front of the park are fresh and delicious, and the ice cream is the perfect treat for the end of a long day. Our favorite snack is the Sand Pail Sundae available at Happy Landings Ice Cream. This snack is perfect for sharing among your family and features Vanilla and Chocolate Swirled Soft-serve, Waffle Cone Pieces, Vanilla Cake, Cookies ‘n Cream Crumbles, Hot Fudge, Caramel Sauce, Whipped Cream, Rainbow Sprinkles, and a Cherry layered into an exclusive souvenir Sand Pail Bucket.
#5 Special Events
Looking for an exclusive experience at Typhoon Lagoon? Check out the Disney H2O Glow After Hours at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. This 3-hour, limited-capacity event takes place after the normal operating hours for Typhoon Lagoon, and is the ultimate supper party featuring low wait times, a DJ dance party, beloved Disney Characters, and snacks included.
Guests looking to hang 10 can catch a surf lesson in the Typhoon Lagoon wave pool. Experienced riders can shoot the curl in North America’s largest outdoor wave pool before the park opens or after it closes. The sessions are 3-hours long and come packed with 100 waves. There are public and private lessons available, and if you opt for a private lesson you can even choose the direction of the waves!
#4 Reasonable Price
Tickets for Typhoon Lagoon are very reasonably priced, but the true value here is adding the cost to your multi-day park ticket. If you already have the Park Hopper option, you can upgrade to Park Hopper Plus, which generally only adds about $20 onto the price of a Park Hopper Ticket, but adds in as many visits to the water park as your park ticket days-meaning a 5 day ticket will now include 5 park days and 5 water park visits! The Park Hopper Plus also includes these options in addition to the water parks:
- ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
- Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course.
- Disney’s Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf Course.
- Disney’s Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course.
- FootGolf at Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course.

#3 Rapid Refill Cups
This probably could have been rolled into the section about snacks, but the fact that Disney has this option available at the water parks but not the theme parks makes this worthy of its own section. Guests can purchase a Rapid Refill mug to refill drinks throughout the day for one low price. The current price of the mugs is $12.99, with the cost to re-activate a mug you already purchase a few dollars less. Considering a single fountain beverage will set you back $4.29, these mugs really are a great, money-saving option. Note your resort mug will not get you refills at the water parks, so if you have a rapid refill resort mug you will need to purchase a separate one for Typhoon Lagoon.
#2 Easy Transportation
If you are staying at an on-property Disney resort, transportation to Typhoon Lagoon is fairly easy; you just need to hop on a bus to Disney Springs, and then transfer onto a the Typhoon Lagoon bus. The entrance to Typhoon Lagoon is located close to Disney Springs, making it easy to drive to (or grab an Uber to) the park from any of the Disney resorts. Busses run frequently between Disney Springs and Typhoon Lagoon, making the journey there fairly short (they also drop you off right at the entrance, negating the long walk across the parking lot from your car). To make your commute easy, consider renting towels at the park instead of bringing your own. Typhoon Lagoon also has large changing areas and showers, allowing you to change into dry clothes before your trip back to your resort.
#1 Amazing Theming
Typhoon Lagoon, in true Disney fashion, is impressively themed. The theming starts with fun signs at the entrance to the park that sum up the story of Typhoon Lagoon (a boat was swept up in a typhoon and landed on top of a volcano, destroying the village and causing the inhabitants to rebuild using found items). The buildings, scenery around the lazy river, and iconic mountain-top boat above the lazy river all serve as visual reminders of this theming. The wave pool is surrounded by a sand beach area, and island music plays on speakers throughout the park.
Typhoon Lagoon truly is a relaxing and fun way to spend a lazy day at Walt Disney World, and is the perfect way to recharge between busy park days. Be sure to include a visit to the water park in your next Walt Disney World vacation!
