Okay, I’ll be honest: this one got me. Bakso the tiger is leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The little Sumatran cub so many of us watched grow up on Maharajah Jungle Trek is moving to another zoo later this fall, and he just celebrated his second birthday before he goes.
So this birthday isn’t just a birthday. It’s a send-off.

Why Bakso the Tiger Is Leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Here’s the part that softens the goodbye. Bakso the tiger’s move isn’t random. It comes from a recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, a program where accredited zoos team up to care for endangered animals and protect the future of their species.
It’s also just what tigers do. As young tigers mature, they naturally grow more independent and eventually head off to claim territory of their own. At two years old, Bakso is stepping into adulthood, and this move is the natural next step for him.
Where Is He Going, and When?
Disney hasn’t named his new home yet. What we do know is that he’s headed to another AZA-accredited zoo, and the move is planned for later this fall. I’ll update you as soon as we know more.
A Big Job for a Young Tiger
This is where my heart goes from sad to proud. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, and fewer than 600 are left in the wild. Down the road, Bakso could become a dad himself and help give this species a better shot at the future.

From Tiny Cub to Confident Young Tiger
Bakso the tiger was born in September 2024 to mom Sohni and dad Conrad, and it didn’t take long for him to steal the show. We were so excited when he arrived that we welcomed the new tiger cub right here on Disney Addicts.
He made his public debut in January 2025, and from then on, guests from all over the world got to watch him grow up in real time. One visit he’d be a fuzzy little guy, and the next he’d be splashing in the pool or ambushing his enrichment like a pro.
By September 2025, he was celebrating his very first birthday party. And now, a year later, he’s a handsome, confident young adult with a curious, adventurous personality all his own.
Fun Facts About Our Favorite “Meatball”
- His name has a story. “Bakso” comes from the Indonesian word for meatball. Honestly, perfect.
- His meals are made with care. Sumatran tigers are carnivores, and the Animal Kingdom tigers’ food is prepared at Disney’s Animal Nutrition Center.
- He’s one of a kind. No two tigers share the same stripe pattern, so there will only ever be one Bakso.
A Birthday Send-Off Full of His Favorite Things
For his second birthday, Bakso the tiger got spoiled with a few of his all-time favorites: icy treats and goat’s milk. Simple, sweet, and very much a tiger’s idea of a party.
Knowing it’s one of his last big moments at Animal Kingdom makes it hit differently. Disney’s own team said it plainly: they’ll miss seeing him explore his habitat every day. Same here, friends. Same here.

As cute as Bakso the tiger is, this milestone belongs to the people behind the scenes, too. Dozens of Disney animal care experts, including veterinarians, nutritionists, and keepers, have been part of his story. From his meals to his habitat, they’ve been there every step of the way.
Sarah, the Keeper Living Her Dream
Sarah is an animal keeper on Maharajah Jungle Trek who handles the tigers’ daily care, feeding, enrichment, and health monitoring. She shared that working with tigers was always her dream, and getting to care for a baby tiger like Bakso has been exactly that. She says she has learned so much just by watching him learn, grow, and hit his milestones.
Can you imagine being the person who watched him go from wobbly cub to confident young tiger? That’s a bond you carry with you.
Michelle, Building Trust From Day One
Then there’s Michelle, a Behavioral Husbandry Manager who works alongside the keepers with Bakso and his mom, Sohni. Her work with them started before Bakso was even born.
Michelle helps the team teach Bakso to take part in his own health checks, building trust so he can be an active partner in his care. She also helps design parts of his habitat and enrichment to spark his natural behaviors and keep that growing brain challenged. Along the way, she’s gotten to know his curious, playful personality incredibly well.
Her favorite part of the job? In her words, “getting a front row seat to all of the small moments that shape Bakso’s personality.” She also pointed out that people don’t realize how different every tiger’s personality really is. After watching Bakso these past two years, I believe it.
Why Bakso the Tiger’s Birthday Matters So Much
It’s easy to see a tiger birthday as just a cute photo op. But with so few Sumatran tigers left in the wild, every birthday is a big deal. Each one is a reminder that great animal care, paired with real conservation work, can make a difference for this species.
Bakso is a living example of Disney working hand in hand with the AZA’s Species Survival Plan to support endangered and threatened animals in human care. The work reaches far beyond the park, too. Through the Disney Conservation Fund, part of Disney’s Planet Possible commitment, Disney has given more than $4.5 million to 15 organizations working with local communities to protect tigers and their forest homes since 1995.

How to Say Goodbye to Bakso the Tiger Before He Leaves
The good news? There’s still time. Bakso is at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for now, so if you have a fall trip coming up, you can visit him before he heads out.
You’ll find him on Maharajah Jungle Trek in the Asia section of the park. It’s a self-guided walking trail through the Anandapur Royal Forest, and the tigers are the stars. Take your time at the tiger viewing areas. If he’s feeling playful, it’s one of the best shows in the park.
Since Disney hasn’t announced an exact departure date, I wouldn’t wait too long if seeing him is on your list.
