Disney’s new service Disney Genie + is now officially underway! With a new service always comes questions and what-ifs. One huge service that Disney Genie + offers is the ability to purchase individual Lightning Lane access to certain attractions and skip the lines. Lightning Lane has turned out to be a very popular service, and we’ve even seen certain popular attractions even sell out! So what would happen if you purchase this service and the attraction gets shut down? Let’s go over how and when Disney would refund a purchase.
The attraction shuts down and does not reopen
We’ve seen this situation before- an attraction gets shut down due to technical difficulty. Generally, the attraction can be fixed and resume normal operations, but what if it doesn’t reopen? If the attraction you purchased individual Lightning Lane access for does not reopen, a refund will automatically be issued at the end of the park operating hours. So there should be no need to contact guest services or take any further action. This policy was recently confirmed by an unnamed Disney spokesperson to the Orlando Sentinel.
The attraction reopens, but it reopens outside of your ride window
Here is another scenario that could occur. Let’s say you purchased Lightning Lane access to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the ride shut down due to a Florida storm coming through. The storm does end up passing, but it is now beyond your window. So the attraction did reopen, but beyond the time selected. In this case, you would call or visit guest services and explain the situation. We have seen multiple reports on social media that in this instance, guests have been given Disney gift cards to make up for the money lost. A refund in this instance would not be automatic and would require speaking to guest services.
Disney also has officially stated that if they cancel the individual Lightning Lane purchase, a refund would be allowed. Check out the official rules below.
Like it or not, it looks as though Lightning Lane is here to stay, and at least now we know how and when a refund will be offered! Keep in mind that Genie + is a non-refundable service and individual Lightning Lane selections under these specific conditions will likely be the only time any refunds are issued.
