Disney Topiaries: Where Bushes Bloom into Beloved Characters!

The story of Disney topiaries goes back all the way to Walt Disney himself. During his travels in Europe, he was enchanted by the topiary artistry he saw there. Inspired, he decided to bring this art form to his own magical creation so in 1963, the first topiaries took root at Disneyland, and soon became a beloved tradition that spread across the different Disney parks.
Fast forward to today, and Disney topiary artists have taken this art form to a whole new level. Gone are the days of simple geometric shapes. Today’s topiary artists are skilled horticulturalists who can coax shrubs and trees into intricate and lifelike representations of our favorite Disney pals like Tiana and Mirabel.
One of the coolest techniques used by topiary artists is the sphagnum moss frame. This method involves creating a wireframe in the shape of the desired character and then packing it with sphagnum moss, a special type of moss that retains moisture and nutrients. Shrubs are then planted into the moss, and over time, they grow and fill out the frame, bringing the character to life.
2024 brought a wave of exciting new topiary additions to Walt Disney World, most specifically, at Epcot, where fans of Guardians of the Galaxy were thrilled to see a towering Groot topiary, while characters from the new movie “Wish” also sprouted up around the park.
But topiaries aren’t just about the latest and greatest. There are also classic characters that continue to delight park goers year after year. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy are all topiary staples, and their timeless charm never goes out of style.
