Muppet Christmas Carol is getting the recognition and love it deserves. More than ever, it feels like social media is filled with love and appreciation for arguably the best version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale – as it should! For over 31 years, people have watched this beloved film time and time again to get into the true spirit of Christmas. We highly recommend that if you have not sat down with your young ones and made watching this film an annual tradition, you should start now!
So what is so different about the full-length version of Muppet Christmas Carol than the one readily available on Disney+? Well, it turns out that when the film was released in theater – the full-length version was the standard. Yet, when it was released, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was then-Disney studio chief, pitched to remove the song “When Love is Gone”.
According to an interview with Director Brian Henson in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he had to “reluctantly cut the song”.
“[Katzenberg] never forced me to do anything, but he said, ‘Do you see how antsy those kids are getting?'” Henson tells EW. “He’s like, ‘It’s just a little too adult-emotional for little kids to stay connected.’ [The movie] certainly plays well without the song, but I obviously preferred having the song in. I think it’s good for kids to be pulled into deeply emotional moments, even if they feel slightly awkward about it when they’re in a movie theater.”
So in some releases, the song was kept, and in others, the song was removed. On Disney+, though the full-length version is not the main advertised version, you can still watch it! To get there, click on the film and head to ‘Extras’. There you will see the deleted song on its own, and the Full Length version with the song included right next to it!
We hope you have a wonderful holiday with you and yours and always remember to LIGHT THE LAMP, NOT THE RAT!
