There are very few Christmas displays more impressive or iconic than the famous life-size gingerbread house at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Yes, you heard that correctly-this thing is actually LIFE-SIZED! You may be wondering how much work is to actually build something this grand? Here is the sweet scoop on this annual masterpiece!
A Massive Amount of Ingredients
To build something this large takes a whole lot of ingredients! This culinary creation takes 1,050 pounds of honey, 800 pounds of flour, 600 pounds of chocolate, 600 pounds of powdered sugar, 140 pints of egg whites, and 35 pounds of spices, and of course the perfect amount of pixie dust! Imagine the grocery bill for all that!
Find the Hidden Mickeys
It is rumored that for every year the gingerbread house has been built, a new hidden mickey is added! That means this year there should be 22 hidden mickeys! 2018 marked the 20th anniversary of its creation, but it was not built in 2020 due to the pandemic.
A task this large takes an entire team, and The Grand Floridian Pastry Team spend more than 400 hours each year just baking, as well as another 160 hours constructing and decorating! That is a lot of time and effort!
It is also a Bake Shop
If you go to check out the gingerbread house, make sure you swing by The Bake Shop at the Gingerbread House, located right in the Grand Floridian Lobby. Looking at this massive treat can definitely make you crave something sweet- so be sure to get a treat during your visit!
Watch for your Favorite Characters
You won’t just find hidden Mickey’s throughout the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House, you also may see some of your favorite Disney characters! Make sure to look above each of the windows!
