It’s well-known that Disney offers top-notch entertainment when it comes to holidays. There’s Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and others throughout the year. But what about Mardi Gras? It may surprise you to hear that there are ways to celebrate Mardi Gras at Walt Disney World Resort! If you’re planning on traveling to Disney World during the week of Mardi Gras, then you should consider some of the options for celebrating!
Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter
The theme of this Disney resort is to capture the essence of New Orleans and its historic French Quarter. The appearance and atmosphere help make this a charming Disney resort option. It’s enjoyable to take a stroll along the Sassagoula River located in the back of this resort. From the festive pool to the courtyard filled with magnolia blossoms, there is a lot of colorful details for guests.
If you’re staying at this resort during the holiday, then you should ask what Mardi Gras options are available. They usually offer some nighttime entertainment such as a small dance party with a DJ playing music. Last year, they offered activities such as the opportunity for kids to design their own Mardi Gras masquerade mask.
The Food!
We can’t forget the sweet treats associated with “Fat Tuesday” since it’s a highlight of this joyous celebration! For instance, King cake is a staple of Mardi Gras. You can find some available at Sassagoula Fireworks & Food Factory. This quick-service dining option is found at French Quarter resort. It’s a great place to enjoy the flavors and atmosphere of Mardi Gras year-round. You can also find cupcakes and Mickey Mouse shaped beignets! These beignets are tasty and addicting!
While you’re at it, you can also sample some of the other New Orleans inspired cuisine. You’ll find dishes featuring Andouille sausage, Po’ Boy sandwiches, and even dishes with catfish.
Disney Characters wearing Mardi Gras costumes
Did you know that certain Disney characters have Mardi Gras outfits? It’s rare to see, but you might catch them at Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter in the evening of Mardi Gras.
Both Mickey Mouse and Goofy were seen last year at French Quarter resort. They were available to meet guests in the evening for some limited time Disney magic.
Golf Cart Parade at French Quarter
This is one of the hidden gems at French Quarter during Mardi Gras. Disney offers a small day-time parade at Port Orleans – French Quarter involving decorative golf carts. Guests can watch these golf carts and judge them in a fun contest to announce the best “floats” in the parade. Even characters from The Princess and the Frog make an appearance! Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen can be seen in the parade.
Last year had a Toy Story themed golf cart that was designed as Slinky Dog Dash!
An imaginative Aladdin themed golf cart was also a big crowd pleaser. Even though the golf cart parade takes place during the day, they park some of the favorites for guests to enjoy at night. Yet another great reason to head to Port Orleans – French Quarter!
We hope this inspires some people find ways to enjoy the spirit of Mardi Gras when visiting Walt Disney World!
