Learn about the Local Business that Brings the Flowers to Bloom at Disney World

The vibrant, meticulously curated floral displays that enchant millions of visitors at Walt Disney World are a testament to the park’s dedication to immersive storytelling. From the iconic Mickey floral arrangement greeting guests at Magic Kingdom’s entrance to the lush, colorful bedding plants lining pathways throughout the parks and resorts, flowers play a crucial role in creating the magical atmosphere. While Disney’s own skilled horticulturalists maintain these living works of art, the story of their origins often begins miles away, in the heart of Central Florida.

Behind the scenes, a third-generation family business, Dutch Mill Nursery, plays a pivotal role in bringing these floral visions to life. For over 50 years, this local nursery has been the primary supplier of many of the flowering plants that grace Disney’s landscapes. Their contributions include an array of varieties, from violas and geraniums to begonias and sunflowers. The company’s journey began in 1961, when John and Irene Lommerse established Dutch Mill Nursery with a single acre and a vision to serve local garden centers, landscapers, and lawn maintenance companies. As Walt Disney World prepared to open its gates in 1971, Dutch Mill Nursery began its long-standing relationship with the company, providing locally grown plants and flowers.

As Walt Disney World expanded, so did Dutch Mill Nursery. What began as a small operation has flourished into a thriving business, now encompassing over 16 acres and 25 greenhouses. The Lommerse family legacy continues as their children and grandchildren carry on the tradition, operating the hometown business in Sanford, Florida. According to Jinny, a second-generation family member, the collaboration with Disney has been instrumental in the company’s growth, transforming it from a retail venture into a successful wholesale operation. There’s a strong sense of pride within the company, every time their flowers are seen displayed throughout the disney parks.

The relationship between Walt Disney World Horticulture and Dutch Mill Nursery is one of collaboration and partnership. “The success of our business is driven by great relationships and collaboration with partners,” said Patrick Zusack, director of Walt Disney World Horticulture. “As the horticulture industry has evolved over the years, Dutch Mill Nursery has been instrumental in supporting us with experimenting and testing various bedding plants for our gardens that are sustainable in our Florida climate.” Dutch Mill Nursery stands as an example of the numerous Florida-based small businesses that contribute to the magic of Walt Disney World, demonstrating the power of local partnerships in creating extraordinary experiences.
