The start of the Lunar New Year is just around the corner! This year will be the Year of the Dragon and as we all know about Disney – they have never shied away from featuring Dragons throughout many of their films. We’ve compiled a list, with the help of D23 and Disney Rewards of some Iconic Disney Dragons. Make sure to let us know in the comments below which Dragon is your favorite!
- The Reluctant Dragon (1941): Not all dragons are the same – and the Reluctant Dragon goes to prove that! If you’ve never seen this fantastic film before, it not only holds this mold-breaking tale but contains some amazing behind-the-scenes footage as well!
- Sleeping Beauty (1949): Well, it wouldn’t be Sleeping Beauty without a villain and an evil fairy named Maleficent. Her true power takes its looming form when she transforms into a green flame-breathing dragon! This Dragon is so iconic we get to see a live-action version of this Dragon in Maleficent (2014) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019). If you’re lucky, you’ll head to Disneyland Paris where there may be a familiar-looking dragon lurking beneath the castle!
- Honorable Mention – The Sword and the Stone (1963): Madam Mim briefly takes form as a pink dragon that looks oddly like a crocodile.
- Pete’s Dragon (1977): Elliot is the dragon every child wishes they could know, but he makes fast friends with a very special boy named Pete! This tale was not only based on the 1977 classic, but a live-action version was created in 2016 as well!
- Honorable Mention – The Black Cauldron (1985): If it’s been a minute since you’ve checked out The Black Cauldron, a reminder that the main villain, the Horned King, has his minions, the Gwythaints, patrolling for enemies!
- Mulan (1998): The main character may be Mulan, but she would not have gotten so far if it wasn’t for her trusty and loyal sidekick, Mushu. Picking a dragon for Mulan’s sidekick wasn’t a spoof – but the Dragon symbolizes strength and good luck in Chinese culture – something Mulan needs quite a lot of!
- Enchanted (2007): The worlds of Andalasia and New York City collide in this film! The Dragon form of Queen Narissa, also known as Dragon Narissa, appears as a challenge to our heroine Giselle!
- Honorable Mention – Alice in Wonderland (2010): We hear it mentioned throughout the film but when we behold the Jabberwocky in Alice in Wonderland, you’ll hold your breath!
- Honorable Mention – Onward (2020): A domesticated dragon named Blazey is sure to warm your hearts in this film!
- Raya and the Last Dragon (2021): A film dedicated to finding the last remaining dragon – a dragon named Sisu! This Dragon has a lot to say but teams up with Raya in order to save the world!
