If you’ve been waiting to enjoy the work of Sparkshorts on Disney+, then Self is a fantastic place to start. Sparkshorts have been giving animators a creative outlet, the likes of which hadn’t been seen until recently. The idea is simple enough, give your animators an avenue to create something all their own and showcase it on a platform like Disney+! The results have been fantastic and some of Pixar’s best work has been within the Sparkshorts the entire time. For example – the short ‘Kitbull’ was even nominated for an Academy Award!
With that being said, what is so special about ‘Self’? To start with, Self is Sparkshorts’ FIRST stop-motion animation. It’s visually stunning and is just so visually pleasing to look at – as is almost everything in that medium. The colors are warm and you almost forget you’re watching stop-motion.
One thing to pay attention to is that Self is the only stop-motion character, the rest are Computer Graphic. That distinction is made very early on and its easy to see that a character like ‘Self’ is about to take a lot on, simply due to her differences.
Attempting to describe the story without spoiling the message can be tough to do, but Disney+ has done it so well. “A wooden doll who desperately wants to fit in makes an ill-fated wish upon a star, sparking a journey of self-discovery. Her desire to blend in with her peers leads her down a harmful path, challenging her perspective of both who she is and where she belongs.” There’s not much more to say than that. I found myself identifying with the main character and remembering my own path that I am still on to figure out who I am as a person.
Pixar and Sparkshorts do such a fantastic job with messages about finding out who you are – which is why I believe it succeeded so well.
