The PeopleMover is an attraction that may often be overlooked when visiting The Magic Kingdom. It doesn’t have the same star power as other slower-moving rides like It’s A Small World or Pirates of the Caribbean, nor do rope droppers don’t seem to be clamoring for the first spot in line. So why have we chosen the PeopleMover for this list?
This is a ride for Disney Fans. Of course, you don’t have to be a Disney Parks diehard to enjoy the attraction, but there is something about the TTA PeopleMover that brings us back to the original planning and ingenuity of what Walt Disney had dreamed of for this pristine Florida area. The ride was conceived in order to be shown at the 1964 – 1965 World’s Fair under a different name but didn’t make the cut. Instead, a version of the PeopleMover was installed within Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. Walt’s true dream for the PeopleMover was that it would be the main method of transportation in his prototype city – Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT).
Walt’s death in 1966 meant that his dream did not become reality – and instead of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover becoming Epcot’s main mode of transportation, it was placed throughout Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom. At the time of its installation in 1975, it was called ‘WEDWay PeopleMover’, in honor of Walter Elias Disney. It has since been renamed and its sibling in Disneyland has been removed. Making this transportation of the future a historic icon within Magic Kingdom.
Now that we’ve covered what makes this attraction so special – what about it makes it magical? Well, it’s a particularly unique way to view Tomorrowland. You’re taken behind the scenes of several attractions all whilst cruising through the sky above the bustling crowds of the park. This is a great ride of around 10 minutes where you get to rest your feet and collect yourself after a day in the hot Florida sun. There is also a sweet little model of an early concept model for Epcot that can be seen during the ride. The wait times are generally short as well since the ride is on a moving track – and it’s fantastic if you’re traveling with someone who may be unable to do a high-speed ride.
If you’re planning for your first trip to Disney, this attraction may not be the first one on your list, but it’s definitely worth the ride if you have the time and the lines are short!
