Q-What free activities are available at Walt Disney World during the holidays?

A- Around the holidays at Walt Disney World Resort there is no shortage of amazing sites and things to do outside the parks. A personal favorite is resort hopping to check out all the cool new holiday decorations. To be more specific, the amazing life-sized edible gingerbread decorations. A tradition that started in 1999 with the first gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian which now has been uniquely adapted by several resorts. To construct the magnificent confectionary works of art is no simple task. This year the pastry chef’s at the Grand Floridian spent 560 hours baking, assembling and decorating the Victorian era inspired Gingerbread house. The eighty square foot house measures 17 feet wide and 16 feet high. To create such an amazing piece of edible art 10,000 pieces of gingerbread had to be made in the Grand Floridian bakery. All together 600 pounds of powdered sugar, 700 pounds of chocolate, 280 cups of egg whites, 1050 pounds of honey, 180 pounds of apricot glaze, and 35 pounds of spices were needed to create this years Grand Floridian Gingerbread house.

While this work of art can make anyone awe struck, what is even more exciting is located behind the gingerbread house-where you can buy a piece of your own. You can purchase a wide variety of gingerbread novelties from the Grand Floridian, from a simple single like the ones used to create the life sized gingerbread house to your own smaller version of the whole house.  Don’t worry, you won’t be let down because they taste as great as they smell!

If you have visited the Grand Floridian Resort’s Gingerbread house before then feel free to mix things up by visiting Disney’s Contemporary Resort for a Frozen themed gingerbread creation, Disney’s Beach Club Resort for the life size carousel made from gingerbread or Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and the New England inspired train display with edible candy village and mountains made of sugar. Visiting the resorts is free and a great way to escape the heavy crowds found in the parks, you can also make the most of your visit and enjoy a meal from one of the many resort restaurants.
