If it’s on the internet, it must be true…right? Wrong! This is especially true regarding our beloved Walt Disney and what he did (or didn’t) say. Seriously, fake Disney quotes are everywhere, and even an avid Disney addict like myself was shocked to find out some of these quotes were completely fake or said by someone else. In honor of Walt’s birthday 2 days ago- let’s explore 5 quotes he never said.
1. If you can dream it, you can do it.
We see this quote all the time, but it wasn’t actually Walt Disney who came up with this phrase. This phrase was coined by a Disney Imagineer who worked on the Horizons attraction at EPCOT and was written specifically for the attraction.
2. The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.
This quote is close, but actually missing a very important word. The REAL quote reads, “The more you ARE like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.” Adding the word “are” changes the whole meaning of the quote.
3. The more you are in a state of gratitude, the more you will attract things to be grateful for.
While this quote is very inspirational and follows the “law of attraction”, it was never said by Walt Disney.
4. Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever.
While this sounds like something Walt would say, he never actually said it.
5. You can’t just let nature run wild.
It’s hard to say exactly how this bizarre quote somehow got attributed to Walt Disney, but it was actually said by the Interior Secretary for President Nixon, Walter J. Hickel.
So I guess the saying is true, “believe none of what you hear and believe half of what you see.” While these quotes may have been fake, there are plenty of real quotes from Walt Disney we can be inspired by!
