Walt Disney World is going to have a new, innovative mode of transportation in 2019. The Disney Skyliner is a state-of-the-art gondola transportation system that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2019. It will connect Epcot and Hollywood Studios to four of the Disney World Resort’s hotels – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Riviera Resort. The project was announced in 2017 and it has been really fun to watch the construction progress.
Testing of the new Skyliner started very recently with gondolas out on the wire from Epcot’s International Gateway. The gondola itself was thoroughly wrapped to keep it protected. The Epcot station also has a beautiful new paint job and is themed perfectly to fit in with nearby World Showcase.
Even though we can’t see the details on this gondola, Disney has released some details about the theming of the Skyliner gondolas – they will be decked out with art from some of our favorite characters and attractions. Disney has so many wonderful stories to include in the project. Some of the Skyliner Cabin themes will be:
- “Beauty & the Beast”
- “Frozen”
- The Haunted Mansion
- “Peter Pan”
- “Moana”
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- “Coco”
The Gondola cabins themselves were on display at the D23 event back in November. Guests were able to check out the size, scale and interior of the cabins.
Once the Skyliner is fully operational, it is expected to have the capacity to transport 4000-5000 guests per hour. The timing of the opening of the Skyliner seems to align nicely with the opening of Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios in late 2019.
I am really excited for this additional transportation option to be up and running in fall 2019. It will hopefully alleviate some of the congestion on other internal forms of Disney transportation. It will also be amazing to see Disney World from a brand new vantage point. The views promise to be absolutely stunning.
