Are you familiar with Disney’s movie entries in the early 1980s? Walt Disney Productions produced Tron in 1982 and it told an obscure science-fiction story of adventure in video games. The movie was first deemed a financial disappointment, but critical acclaim helped the film succeed in its legacy over time. It’s time to give credit to the Tron movie franchise and we hope you watch these great films!
TRON (1982)
Tron is the story about a video game programmer and his adventure in the digital gaming world. Jeff Bridges plays Kevin Flynn, a video game developer and computer programmer at the ENCOM company. He gets transported into the video game world and finds himself facing a series of challenges in his journey back home. Jeff Bridges also played a second role as CLU (Codified Likness Utility) in the video game world. Kevin Flynn and CLU work together to help overthrow their digital opponents using dazzling sci-fi combat visuals.
Tron proved to be a unique movie in its special effects alone. But the story and video game setting cemented the movie’s status as a memorable Disney film. It’s also worth revisiting to see a reminder of 1980s video games!
TRON: Legacy
The sequel arrived 28 years later in 2010. The story follows Sam Flynn, the adult son of the first movie’s protagonist. His father went missing when he was young and no one knows where Kevin Flynn went to. Then a beacon transmission draws Sam into his father’s private computer lab, which is hidden away in a video game arcade. The updated visuals and special effects are stunning in this sequel. It stays faithful to the mythos established in the first film and introduces new characters, such as Olivia Wilde’s Quorra.
Disney Parks: Tron Lightcycle Run
Over time, the Tron franchise made its way into Disney Parks. The first Tron attraction debuted at Shanghai Disneyland when the park opened in 2016. The ride is a roller coaster adventure through a semi-enclosed structure in Tomorrowland. Disney is currently working on constructing the Tron attraction for Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. The name of the attraction is “Tron Lightcycle Power Run” at Shanghai Disneyland. However, it’s been established that the attraction’s official name for Magic Kingdom is “Tron Lightcycle Run.”
The ride is inspired by the lightcycle vehicles shown in the Tron movies. It’s akin to a futuristic motorcycle thrill ride in a brightly lit video game environment. The ride has received fantastic reviews and critical acclaim at Shanghai Disneyland. The Magic Kingdom version is planned to debut in 2021 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World. Many Disney fans are eager to see the new Tron ride at Magic Kingdom when it opens up next year!
Both TRON and TRON: Legacy are currently available on the Disney+ streaming service. It’s worth checking out these films if you want to familiarize yourself with more entries in the Disney movie library. Both serve as a great double feature for movie night at home!
