We are a family of 6, which limits our options when we want to stay on Walt Disney World property. If you don’t want to spend a ton of money on Disney Vacation Club property, and you have a group of 6, then Fort Wilderness Cabins are the place for you!
There are a few things that all Disney properties have. For example, if you are on the Disney property then you’ll have all the perks of online check-in, access to Magical Express bus transportation from the airport, free bus transport between parks, early fast pass scheduling, and advanced dining reservations. You’ll have the free wi-fi in your resort and merchandise delivery & pick up once it resumes post-covid19.
Let’s talk about what makes Fort Wilderness awesome.
- Location: Ft. Wilderness’s proximity to the Magic Kingdom makes it a prime location, especially because it is priced as a moderate resort and all of the other resorts near Magic Kingdom are deluxe resorts. If you will be doing multiple days at MK or if you have young kids who need naps during the day, then Ft. Wilderness fits the bill.
- Transportation: Like the other Walt Disney World resorts you can catch a bus to the parks, but you can also catch a boat to Magic Kingdom. It’s a super relaxing ride too!
- Theme: American Frontier complete with wildlife and log cabins! Ft. Wilderness is MADE for people who enjoy the outdoors, camping, hiking, and fishing OR for people who just love peace and quiet (like we do!). The campground itself is HUGE. How big is it? Big enough to have its own internal bus system to get around. We rent a golf-cart when we go which just adds to the fun for our kids. We highly recommend getting one because it’s not really a “walkable” resort.
- Camping Options: Bring your own camper, tent, or pop-up and save BIG on costs! They have parking pads up to RV’s up to 60 ft with sewage hook-ups, so they can accommodate some pretty big ones.
- Cabin Rental: If you’re more into “GLAMping” then camping (like we are) then you will love the cabins. They can fit 6 people pretty comfortably. Each cabin has 1 Queen bed and a set of twin bunk beds in the sleeping area. Then they have a kitchen and living room. The living room has 1 Double size sleeper sofa. We all felt like we had plenty of room to stretch and have our own relaxing spaces while we were in the cabin. There are laundry places throughout the property and you can get grocery delivery.
- Pools/ Spa: There are two swimming pools on the Fort Wilderness property. The Meadow Swimming has a pool, small waterslide, splash pad, and a whirlpool. You’ll also find the Meadow Snack Bar by the pool. The other pool is smaller and is called the Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool. It also has a whirlpool to relax in after a long day at the parks.
- Restaurants: There are a few places to enjoy a bite at Fort Wilderness.
- Table Service: Trail’s End Restaurant – You can grab, Breakfast, Brunch or the Dinner Buffet and get yummy comfort food.
- SPECIAL: Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review – Dinner and a Show you can read all about it here. It’s a little bit campy, but fun and the food is delicious. We put it off for years, but once we went were happily surprised by how good it was.
- Quick Service: The Chuck Wagon.- Burgers & salads, for Dinner P & J’s Southern Takeout – American Comfort Food BLD, Crockett’s Tavern
- Other Cool Stuff: Ft. Wilderness Archery lessons (has a cost), Tri-Circle-D Ranch for all the horses at Disney, pony rides, wagon rides, & Chip N Dales Campfire Sing A Long. There are just so many amazing things to do!
I really can’t recommend Fort Wilderness enough. It’s perfect for big families, those who want to just get away from the overstimulation that often comes along with Disney trips and all at a moderate price! Definitely check it out for your next trip!

We’re a family a 5, and while there are a few more options for us, they aren’t many. I’ve had my eye on the cabins for awhile now.
