Disney Dollars were first introduced at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 1987, and they were basically fun little coupons that looked like money but with Disney characters on them (so – money but better!). They could be purchased and used at the Parks, Resorts and Disney Stores around the country, and for a few decades they were wildly popular and widely used. I remember getting Disney Dollars from relatives for Christmas and feeling so cool getting to use them to buy my very own souvenirs when we went to Disney World on Spring Break. Ah – the good ole’ days
Unfortunately – all good things must come to an end, and for Disney Dollars that end came in 2016 when Disney announced they would no longer be printing or selling the currency.
So to answer the first part of the question “Can you still buy Disney Dollars?” The answer is NO- Disney is no longer making them, and per their official Website FAQ, they encourage people to give Disney Gift Cards instead – which makes sense, as the world has gone largely digital, and many don’t want to carry cash while on vacation (even if it is cute cash with Mickey on it!)
As for the second part of the question, “Can you still use Disney Dollars?” The answer to that is YES YOU CAN! Per Disney the currency doesn’t expire and can be used at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks/Resorts/Stores/Restaurants, and select Disney Stores in the US will still accept them as well. Additionally, Disney will also accept Disney Dollars on their Cruise Ships
I personally loved Disney Dollars – it’s a little bit of fun from my childhood that I will always fondly remember, and while it’s sad that they don’t make it anymore, I can appreciate that they are moving with the times to a more digital/cash free approach.
As with all things Disney, people do sell them on eBay and collect them as memorabilia – so if you have some you want to spend, you may want to see how much it would be worth to sell it, or even consider hanging onto it yourself as a collector’s item!
