Disney Resorts are always full of magical experiences. We enjoy all of Disney World’s incredible accommodations, but the Monorail resorts always hold a special place in our hearts. Especially Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa!
But is there a way to make this resort even more magical? With a slew of changes coming to other resorts and Disney Parks, we do think a new theme could bolster the charm of the Grand Floridian. If anything, we believe Mary Poppins would be a great theme for this majestic resort!
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a wonderfully grand hotel themed after the Florida beach resorts of the 19th century.
Nestled in between the Polynesian Village Resort and the Magic Kingdom, the Grand Floridian welcomed its first guests in 1988.
This 867-room resort is often referred to as “the jewel in the crown” of the Disney resorts because of its grand architecture and beautiful sights. From rich gardens to the monorail service, the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a must-stay for any Disney lover.
The resort is filled with amenities such as restaurants, lounges, an arcade, shops, swimming pools, playgrounds, a marina, a salon, and a 10,000 square foot spa and health club.
The accommodations at the Grand Floridian take luxury to a new level. The club-level and suite rooms utilize a private elevator to access the 225,000 square foot Sugar Loaf Key building. Most rooms house two queen beds and a day bed while suites include a living room and anywhere from 1-3 bedrooms.
The decor of the guestrooms at the Grand Floridian is themed to include spring colors, printed wallpaper, armoires, marble-top sinks, and gorgeous Victorian woodwork.
The resort certainly has it all!
Why A Mary Poppins Theme Is Fitting For The Resort
So why should we consider Mary Poppins as a theme for the resort? A big example would be the current changes coming to Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Adding the Moana theme is appealing to a new generation of Disney fans. It’s also revitalizing the resort for people to experience something new on their Disney vacation.
When character dining was available at 1900 Park Fare, Mart Poppins was one of the prominent character choices for the restaurant. There’s also the bronze penguin statues on the fountain at the Great Atrium Lobby of the Villas. The characters of the movie already exist in a limited capacity, but they fit the theme of the overall aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the film could help bolster the interior of the resort rooms, too.
Let’s consider the changes coming to the Polynesian Resort. These reimagined spaces feature a new color palette inspired by the Pacific Ocean and its many islands, including details, patterns and textures from the hit Disney Movie “Moana” – look closely and you might even spot some characters from the story like Hei Hei & Maui!
You’ll also see all-new furnishings and fixtures. In the bathrooms, for instance, Disney Imagineers took inspiration from the sandy ocean floor for the tiles and carved details in the vanity. The colorful patterns found throughout the room bring a whole new energy to the space, evoking undulating ocean waves and tropical flowers.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is now accepting bookings for late July 2021, and the next time you pull up to the Great Ceremonial House, you’ll notice even more exciting changes Disney is currently working on. The porte cochere is in the midst of a dramatic overhaul that will feature a high-pitched, open-truss roof covered in a thatch style with pops of color. Above the porte cochere, the Monorail station is receiving new wooden screens with tropical colors, adding to the open and airy vibe befitting of the South Seas.
What do you think? Would you like to see more of Mary Poppins being included at Disney Resorts?
