Question: Do Walt Disney World Parks Close When it Rains?
Answer: No, unless there is extreme weather activity such as a hurricane.
With the humid sub-tropical climate that makes Florida that wonderful palm-tree-filled land of vacation for everyone north of its borders you can expect to see some rainfall. Hurricane season in Florida runs roughly from June through the end of October. The good news is The Walt Disney World Resort Parks most recently closed once in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd and 4 more times between 2004 and 2005 for separate hurricanes. During the rainy season you may see rain as frequent as everyday- but in spurts. There are times of the year that there is an afternoon shower every day. The rainiest season is the summer months, but don’t expect a little rain to ruin your day at the parks! There is so much to do in the parks that does not involve standing outside you can easily run for cover if you’re not a “dancing in the rain” type.
The best way to stop disappointment from a rainy day is to be prepared and know that it won’t ruin your trip. Disney Parks sell rain ponchos in many of their shops and they are small and easy to fit in your backpack or purse for the day. They fold back up nicely and can be reused. You can also bring your own from home! Many dollar stores and other mass retailers even sell a less expensive lighter-weight version. If you have a stroller or larger backpack in tow pack some extra socks or extra pieces of clothing, just in case.
There are certain outdoor stage shows that may close if it’s really pouring but you can check with a Cast Member at your resort or in the parks for information if you have questions during your visit. If you fancy yourself an adventurer then you’re in luck! Rainy park days can be the best. Fewer guests, drastically shorter wait times and a little break from the heat. To commemorate that awesome time why not pick up a souvenir?
