If you happen to be a fan of The Muppets or a fan of The Haunted Mansion – this film has been on your radar for some time. If you are unfamiliar with either fandom, you can still jump into this film without missing a beat. The film joins a delightfully spooky and whimsical ride theme with the comedy and faces we love from The Muppets.
For those who may not know, The Haunted Mansion was an idea that Walt Disney had worked with his team of Imagineers on. Whilst the idea was a work in progress before Walt’s passing, it later reached its full potential and took its rightful place in (almost) all the Disney Parks. While different versions of the attraction vary, the Disneyland and Walt Disney World versions of The Haunted Mansion carry the same story. You journey along, traveling down endless hallways, overlooking halls of ghosts, creaking doors, and glimpsing all things spooky until you change pace in a musical cemetery. The reason for this is simple – two men, Marc Davis and Claude Coats, with two differing opinions on how the ride should be, joined to make one perfect attraction.
The Muppets of course are musical, cute, and funny but if you watch a film like Muppet Treasure Island, the gang of misfits always has done well with dark humor – and making light of it. With this winning combination, there seems to be no better cast to put into some iconic Haunted Mansion roles. Characters like Madam Pigota, a play on Madam Leota and Gauzey the Hatbox Bear, a play on The Hatbox Ghost all play their roles to perfection. The story begins when Gonzo invites Pepe to a ‘fear challenge event’ that is being held at a large mansion, in honor of Gonzos favorite magician, The Great MacGuffin. Things go wonderfully awry in only a way The Muppets can.
If you are looking for a movie to watch with the family – both young and old, this film has everything you can ask for. It’s spooky, funny, and nostalgic – in all the best ways. See your favorite characters take on new roles and reminisce on the times that you yourself took a doom buggy through the Haunted Mansions halls!
