Should I Purchase Travel Insurance for My Trip to Walt Disney World?

Should you or should you not purchase travel insurance for your Walt Disney World vacation, that is the question.  Ultimately, it is up to you!  I know when I first started planning trips to Disney my travel agent asked me if I would like to add it, but I had no idea why I needed it.  After going a few times, let me tell you why I always add it now.

I don’t usually live my life in fear of the “What if”, but for my family the trips to Disney take a lot of planning, saving and number crunching to go.  For other families, however, it doesn’t take as much planning which is OK, but it can still equal a fair amount of money.

At first, I said that I have already spent enough on my trip, so it was always a hard no to adding insurance.  Then one trip the travel agent asked me again right after we had just heard about a Hurricane that “Closed down” Disney.  After some research I learned that Hurricane season runs from June to November!  I had no idea!!  These were typically the dates we take our trips, I was taken aback by this information.  So, when my travel agent asked me again if I would like to purchase travel insurance I immediately said “Yes”!  Then I quickly asked how much this is going to “set me back”.  This, my friends, is where I learned that when purchasing travel insurance through the Walt Disney Company you only purchase travel insurance for adults, children 17 and under are free.  Wait, what?!  Not only that, but the added travel insurance was fairly inexpensive compared to the possible savings you may encounter.

In addition, this writer lives in an area that gets snow and lots of it!  There was one year we had a snow storm in October that dumped 2 ft of snow, which is early for my area.  The threat of snow can cause delays to your vacation.  With the right travel insurance, you can alter your vacation for extenuating circumstances.

Another reason to purchase travel insurance is for family emergencies.  You never know when someone in your traveling party becomes ill or if someone back at home becomes ill or injured and you need to cut your trip short.  Trip cancellation and interruption insurance helps to cover last minute cancelled vacations.

Even though we recommend going directly with Disney’s preferred travel insurance provider, we highly encourage those looking at purchasing to ask questions!  Not all insurance companies provide the same coverage, some cover less and some cover more.  Travel Insurance could also depend on your state.  The best bet to finding out exactly what the travel insurance from Disney provides is to contact the Reservation Center directly to get a detailed description of the plan.

Again, ultimately the decision to purchase travel insurance is up to you.  It isn’t for everyone!  Take your time, do research and make the best possible decision for your family.  There really is no wrong answer when deciding to purchase travel insurance.
