Did you know Disneyland is not the only place to get a Disney fix in California? If you find yourself near the San Francisco area, The Walt Disney Family Museum is a wonderful place to get a full and comprehensive background of Walt Disney’s life. Full of interactive displays, thoughtful quotes, and archival works, the museum displays each of Walt’s works with equal importance and vivid descriptions. Novice and diehard fans alike can all find something to enjoy in this massive tribute to the man behind the mouse.
Though there are numerous areas within the museum, it is generally split into two different sections. Main Museum and Exhibition. The museum covers the majority of Walt’s life and timeline. Growing up in Marceline, his involvement in World War 1, marriage, and of course, Animation. Mary Blair’s works are on display, coverage of the famous Disney Animator Strike is covered, and historic Disneyland plans are showcased. If you are passionate about the parks, add this museum as a top destination to your bucket list. Animatronics, ride blueprints, and the famous Disneyland model are some of the many highlights you can look forward to.
When you head to the museum, make sure you check out the Exhibits. A separate charge, but completely worth it. The museum brings the best of the best of its archives and puts together a fantastic walkthrough. If you’re a local, these exhibits are always changing so it’s important to ensure you are up to date with whatever is currently on display. When I went, there was a drawing section for anyone willing to try their own hand at animation.
The museum has a variety of fun activities that locals and out-of-towners alike should stop by and see! Interested in a Disney Classics movie night? You can check the weekend slots and see what’s playing at the Walt Disney Family Museum all while sharing your love of these classic films with other fans! Interested in honing your animation skills? There are plenty of Pop-up studios to take part in – but make sure you plan ahead as these sessions are quick to sell out! The museum also hosts a variety of Imagineers as well, so monitor the calendars if you don’t want to miss out!
There is a ton to do and see at this Museum and we simply cannot recommend it enough. Make sure you save an entire afternoon for this special spot. There is something for everyone and we hope you have a blast!
