Q: I heard that the Great Movie Ride is closing. When is the last date that I can ride it?
A: Regardless of whether you love The Great Movie Ride or hate it, it is one of Hollywood Studios’ most iconic attractions and opened with the park all the way back in May 1, 1989 which for most Disney moms and dads brings back fond memories of childhood.
One of the announcements made at this year’s D23 Expo is that the classic attraction would be closing to make way for Walt Disney World’s first ride featuring Mickey Mouse – Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The project is taking shape a lot quicker than most thought and it was announced that The Great Movie Ride would be closed as of August 13, 2017 to make way for the new attraction.
The new Runaway Railway ride will feature an original story as riders step into the movie screen and become part of one of Mickey and Minnie’s fun-filled animated shorts. According to information given during D23, the ride will feature state-of-the-art special effects and it’s fair share of Hidden Mickeys.
There’s no word yet on an official opening date for the attraction but we’ll keep you posted.
The Great Movie Ride is not the only attraction to be closing on August 13th. Disney also announced that Universe of Energy and Ellen’s Energy Adventure will be shutting it’s doors at the same time to make way for an extensive Epcot expansion that will include a new Guardians of the Galaxy themed area.
Not a lot has been revealed about the new Guardians area but visitors can expect a large E-ticket attraction based on the film franchise. The ride will use the latest technology to change the ways that guests experience and encounter characters at Walt Disney World.
These are just two of the many exciting changes coming to Walt Disney World Resort in the years ahead. For a details rundown of the exciting changes coming to Disney in the years ahead, check out this article.
