Animal Kingdom welcomed two new babies this week! A baby hippo and a baby gorilla!
On Monday, July 12 the park celebrated the birth of Nile, a hippopotamus calf and just one day later on July 13, a western lowland gorilla was born! What a magical week for Animal Kingdom Park for sure.
The hippo was born on Monday July 12 in the Safi River on Kilimanjaro Safari to mom Tuma! The baby hippo is the third calf she has with dad Henry.
Both mom and baby are bonding onstage, with the calf moving through water like a pro!
Gorilla mom Azizi gave birth to her infant backstage on Tuesday, July 13 during the afternoon. The baby was introduced to the rest of the family onstage at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail later in the day.
Both Azizi and Gino, are also proud parents of another gorilla named Cory who was born in 2014!
Both baby animals were born through the Species Survival Plan, a program overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The plan ensures responsible breeding of vulnerable or critically endangered species including the Nile hippopotamuses and western lowland gorillas to help create healthy, genetically diverse populations for years to come!
