5 Rookie Mistakes to Avoid at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Rookie mistakes are never a good thing at Walt Disney World. These 5 rookie mistakes to avoid at Disney’s Animal Kingdom are ones that may take up time and leave you wishing you had done some things differently. Check out this list of mistakes to avoid and tips that I have learned over the years to help your vacation go as smoothly as possible.

5.) Enjoy the walking trails to see the different animals.

There are several different areas throughout the park where you can see animals. Along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, you may encounter meerkats, zebras, and of course a troop of western lowland gorillas, including a new baby!

On the Maharajah Jungle Trek, you can stroll at your own pace and come face-to-face with a Malayan flying fox, gibbons, water buffalo and of course, the Asian tiger. And don’t forget the Discovery Island Trails. Here, you can watch playful otters, red kangaroo, various birds and more as you walk along the peaceful trails around the Tree of Life.

4.) Look at a map or make a plan to navigate the park.

I am not suggesting that you need to plan out every minute of your day. However, having a plan, even if it’s a loose one, is extremely beneficial. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is set up with various lands, and the Tree of Life is in the center. Keeping that in mind as you plan your day will help eliminate zig-zagging around the park. You will also want to take advantage of the three FastPasses that you get with the purchase of your tickets! If staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you can choose these FastPasses 60 days in advance. Be sure to do so, especially if you want to experience some of the most popular attractions!

3.) Don’t forget about the Mobile Ordering feature to avoid long lines during meal times.

There are many great food options at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Many of these restaurants offer Mobile Ordering, using the My Disney Experience app. Take advantage of this! It will save you so much time.

You are able to order your food on the app and simply push a button to notify the restaurant that you are on your way. When your food is ready, you will get a notification through the app and you enter a separate line to pick it up! It’s very easy and saves a lot of time!

2.) There are some fun and rare characters at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

After September 30, Disney’s Animal Kingdom will once again be the only place to meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse together. This is a fun character meet and greet with a great photo opportunity. There are other characters as well such as Pocahontas, Russell and Dug and more.

1.) Disney’s Animal Kingdom is more than “just a big zoo” or “only a half-day park”.

Don’t make the mistake of skipping this park or not exploring everything it has to offer. By coming early or staying late, you can experience many of the thrilling attractions such as Avatar Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest, or Dinosaur. There are kid-friendly attractions as well including Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo – the Musical, and Adventurers Outpost, a meet and greet with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. There are some great trails where you can see some of your favorite animals such as tigers and gorillas but there is also WAY more to see and do! Plus, take the time to capture all those memories that you make while in the park. There are Disney PhotoPass photographers throughout the park waiting to take your photos. If you have Memory Maker, don’t forget to ask for the Magic Shots!

Stick around for more than half a day so that you can be there first thing in the morning when the animals are likely to be active or into the evening so you can see the Tree of Life Awakening or the Rivers of Light: We are One show. If you try to just stay for a few hours, you will certainly miss some of the best parts of this park!
