When will Disney World go mask free? That’s the question everyone is wondering about and the truth is we don’t have a certain answer.
But there might be hope if rapid Covid-19 testing is in place. Eddie Sotto, a former Disney Imagineer thinks the healthy measure being taken at the parks are not cutting it.
Eddie worked as an Imagineer for The Walt Disney Company for 13 years in projects like Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland and Pooh’s Hunny Hunt at Tokyo Disneyland.
So how would it be possible to go mask free at the parks? His solution is only allow visitors through the turnstiles who have been cleared of infection. Yes, this would be the ideal scenario but how?
Well, incorporating rapid result testing as part of a screening process. Eddie thinks a minimally invasive procedure like providing saliva or blowing into a breathalyzer device, couple with on-site equipment could accurately diagnose an infection within minutes. And he also thinks the process should be a fun experience to the guests.
In a true Imagineer spirit, he thinks the device could be disguised and themed as a bubble maker. The interactive experience will include guests blowing virtual bubbles that encase their images and follow them through a colorful space. At the end if the bubbles turn green that means they are infection free!
“Making people feel safe and happy is the chief objective at a park” Sotto says. “They can’t enjoy an experience unless they are reassured.”
That sounds fun but it’s that actually viable? The answer is perhaps. According to Dr. Morgan Kats, an assistant professor of medicine at John Hopkins and infection disease expert, rapid tests and their ability to help open communities up more can definitely work but she is also a strong advocate for wearing masks and other preventive practices.
While there is a certain truth in park attendance decreasing at the moment and people waiting for the mask policy to be lift to visit, we don’t know for sure how long it would take for that to actually happen.
So in the meantime if you are visiting any Disney park, make sure to wear your mask and keep up with social distancing guidelines to keep you and everyone around you safe!
