A Decade of Magic: Looking Back at the Opening Gates Of Shanghai Disney Resort

Can you believe it’s already been ten years? It feels like just yesterday we were watching the rain fall over Shanghai on June 16, 2016, feeling that unmistakable buzz of history in the making. When the gates to Shanghai Disney Resort swung open for the very first time, it wasn’t just the debut of the world’s sixth Disney resort, it felt like a beautifully penned love letter that brought a classic childhood legacy into a whole new world. From that rainy morning when a choir’s rendition of When You Wish Upon a Star echoed in front of the Enchanted Storybook Castle, we knew we were witnessing something truly special.

From the drawing board, the resort promised to be “Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese,” and boy, did it deliver on that promise. Remember the wonder of walking down Mickey Avenue instead of a traditional Main Street, U.S.A.? Or finding a moment of peace in the Gardens of Imagination, where classic Disney magic blended seamlessly with traditional Chinese symbolism?

At the heart of it all stood the Enchanted Storybook Castle, the grandest, tallest castle ever builtreminding us that no matter how much the world changes, the timeless nature of these stories remains a universal language. Looking back at Bob Iger’s dedication speech, delivered in both Mandarin and English, those words still pull at the heartstrings: “Here you leave today and discover imaginative worlds of fantasy, romance, and adventure…”

Growing Up Fast: The Innovations and Expansions

For so many of you, that summer of 2016 was your very first taste of a Disney park, and the ride lineup did not disappoint. Stepping into the digital grid on TRON Lightcycle Power Run, set sail on the mind blowing Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, and took flight on Soaring Over the Horizon. But Disney didn’t sit still for long. Within just five months, construction was already underway on the park’s first expansion.

By the time Disney Pixar Toy Story Land opened its toy box in 2018, the park had already smashed records with 11 million guests in its first year alone. Suddenly, we were shrunk down to the size of a toy, exploring Al’s Toy Barn and racing on Rex’s Racer, stepping right into a franchise we had grown up watching on the big screen.

Then came the wildly immersive Zootopia land in late 2023. Even the chilly winter weather couldn’t stop fans from showing up in their finest mammalian cosplay to experience the world’s only Zootopia-themed land. From the adrenaline pumping Zootopia: Hot Pursuit to the hilarious “Disney Zootopia Comes Alive” window moments, it felt like the movie had literally broken through the screen. And talk about moving at the speed of magic, when Zootopia 2 hit theaters, Imagineers updated the ride’s ending with the new hit song “Zoo” in a mind-boggling seven weeks. It’s that exact energy and willingness to evolve that has kept us falling in love with the park year after year.

Ten Years of Wishes: The Anniversary and Beyond

Now, celebrating its 10th anniversary, the resort is wrapped in a beautiful, nostalgic glow. The park is alive with a brand-new castle stage show, a delightful Duffy and Friends pre-parade, and a vibrant Zootopia float joining Mickey’s Storybook Express. Walking around the park lately feels like a reunion; favorite treats from the past decade have returned to menus, and limited-edition merchandise is everywhere.

On the eve of the official anniversary, the castle stage lit up with a musical journey through the last ten years, culminating in Bob Iger and Josh D’Amaro joining Mickey and Minnie to light the Wishing Star. Seeing the Cast Members and Imagineers gather for a group photo the next morning was a gentle reminder of the human hearts that create the magic we take for granted.

“To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Shanghai Disneyland is your land… It was created for everyone, bringing to life timeless characters and stories in a magical place that will be a source of joy, inspiration, and memories for generations to come.” — From the 2016 Dedication Inscription.

But as nostalgic as it is to look back, the view looking forward is just as thrilling. Construction is already humming on a ninth themed land, a Spider-Man-inspired neighborhood right next to Zootopia, which just celebrated its own milestone with the final track piece installed for its blockbuster attraction. Beyond the park gates, the resort’s footprint is growing beautifully, with two new hotels on the horizon.

We finally have a name for the third property, the Shanghai Disney Enchanted Star Hotel. Blending stunning Art Nouveau style with Shanghai’s own cultural heritage, this 400-room deluxe hotel will open its doors this winter, offering sweeping views of the castle and Wishing Star Park. It’s a beautiful reminder that while the first decade of Shanghai Disney Resort gave us memories to last a lifetime, the next chapter is just getting started.
